Secondary: STEM Week

Secondary STEM Week gave students practical ways to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics through recess challenges, year-level incursions and an action-packed final assembly.

Throughout the week, recess became a time for building and friendly competition. Teams constructed bridges during the Spaghetti Bridge Challenge before testing how much weight they could support. The STEMazing Race sent students across the College grounds to follow clues and solve problems at different stations.

During the ‘Who Sank the Boat?’ Challenge, students built vessels using limited supplies of paper, aluminium foil, masking tape and toothpicks. Each team named its boat and created a flag before testing how many 50g and 100g ‘passengers’ it could carry.

The pressure became too much for some students, who covered their eyes as more weights were added. The recess program concluded with 3x3 and 4x4 Rubik’s Cube competitions.

Specialised incursions gave each year level a different STEM experience. Year 7 students explored forces, friction and movement, while Year 8 became forensic investigators. Both sessions were delivered by Fizzics Education.

Year 9 students learned the fundamentals of piloting drones before writing commands to automate flight sequences. Year 10 entered an immersive virtual reality environment and explored the possibilities of emerging technology.

The week concluded with an action-packed assembly on the final day of term. Students first faced a Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?-style maths quiz on stage, with the pressure building as the questions became more challenging.

Live science experiments and technology demonstrations then took over as the grand finale, creating an exciting conclusion to Secondary STEM Week and a fantastic end to the term.
