Girton Volleyball States

This year, Girton entered two teams into the Victorian Volleyball Schools Cup. Early Friday morning, we all excitedly hopped on the bus to our new home for the next three days- the Dandenong stadium. The girls team, who bravely entered into Open Honours, were faced with three games on the first day. While they were beaten in every game, each final set score was within 5 points and each game was of high quality. The Division One Boys had two games on the Friday, against Peninsula and Wesley College. Both of these games were won in straight sets, putting the boys in good stead for the finals.

On the second day, the boys had a game against Maffra and a game against St Michael’s. Once again, they won both games very convincingly. The girls also had two games- against Billanook and Ivanhoe Girl’s Grammar. Like the previous day, the set scores were unbelievably close but unfortunately both games were lost.

The third day, Sunday, was finals day. The girls had two placing matches early in the morning against old rivals Upwey and Kew. These games were bittersweet, as we had played these teams ever since Year 7, and this would be the last time we played each other. Once again, these games were incredibly close but both lost. On the other hand, as the boys had remained undefeated for the tournament they qualified for the gold medal match against St. Michael’s. The opposition were very experienced players, so we knew the game would be close. Thankfully, the boys were as consistent and skilled as they had been all weekend and defeated St. Michael’s- meaning that they won the gold medal.

As always, States was a highlight on the volleyball calendar and everyone
