Science Week Celebrations

This week is science week and to celebrate there is a science trivia competition running between tutor groups in the senior school, where a new question is being posted daily on ASTRA. Students are encouraged to check the news each day and to submit their answers to Ms Beckwith via email to be in the running for prizes.

Recently students participated in an international online competition run by Education Perfect. Five of our students achieved excellent results. Jack Harris (11M) received a Gold certificate, Stellina Baxter (11F) received a Silver certificate and Joshua Woods (11R) received a bronze certificate. Arunika Madina (11Je) and Dimitri Kamateros (8Je) both received credit certificates. Girton Grammar placed 260th globally out of over 1,500 schools, 30th in Australia in our division and 7th in Victoria in our division. Well done to all that participated. There is another competition running this week if anyone would like to join in the science week fun.

Another event held not so long ago was the Big Science Competition. This is a prestigious competition run yearly by Australian Science Innovations, providing innovative and challenging programs and competitions for high achieving science students. We had a number of students participate, which was very pleasing. The following students received Distinction and High Distinction in their year level.

Throughout the course of this week, a number of students from Y9-11 have elected to sit the Science Olympiad examinations. These exams are a selection process with the top 25 students in each subject selected to attend Summer School and then the top 4 are selected to represent their country. Jorden Rogers (12Mi) went through this process last year and is a member of the Australian team in the Earth & Environmental Science competitions in Korea this term. We look forward to hearing the results of how these students performed later in the year.
