From the Headmaster

Encouraging young people to be self-motivated is one of the most important things a teacher can do for a student, mostly because of the sense of personal value that follows effort. In days gone by, teachers were more likely to use a carrot and stick method to motivate students, and while this approach can be effective, the results are usually short-term and of low quality. Our Music staff are particularly good at giving young people ‘wings’ and the Junior School and Senior School Ensemble events this week were a wonderful demonstration of passionate teachers inspiring dedicated students.

I was so impressed by the level of engagement of every student on the Ulumbarra stage, which translated directly to the high standard of musicianship that audiences enjoyed, from the very youngest to the most experienced performers. The students’ competence in their craft gave them the confidence to produce beautiful music, and for that, I thank our wonderful Music staff. My warmest thanks also goes to parents who attended one or more Ensemble event, providing the support that is vital in enabling each music student to flourish.

The sporting calendar is extremely busy at the moment with a range of ‘friendlies’ taking place including a Senior School Football team playing against Carey Grammar this week, as well as ICCES and Sandhurst sports. The history of the ‘friendlies’ creates a sociable competition for our students to enjoy and to make connections beyond their own community, while the more competitive events allow athletes to reach their sporting potential. It was fantastic to hear that the Girls Year 7-9 Football team won their ICCES competition. Congratulations to the Junior Girls Hockey team, the Year 7 Girls and Year 7 Boys Table Tennis teams and the Year 8 Girls Table Tennis team, all placing first in last week's Sandhurst division competition. The Year 8 Boys and Year 8 Girls Basketball teams both placed 2nd in the Sandhurst competition, and well done to the Year 9 Boys Netball team, which has won the Victorian Schools Netball Championships. A fine effort from many athletes, in many sports.

More than 20 students took part in the gruelling 14km City to Surf fun run in Sydney last weekend, tackling the famous 2km long ‘heartbreak hill’, at the 6km race mark, with great determination. There were some stunning individual race results and the Girls 19 and Under age group won their race category.

In the Performing Arts space, forthcoming events include the Year 8 Production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the Junior School Production of Mulan and the Forever Young concert with Grace Knight, which will be supported by Senior School musicians. Music, dance and fun surround us daily at School, and it is wonderful to see young people step beyond their comfort zones and grow.

I would like to remind parents that a link to a mobile phone survey was emailed to all parents and carers this week and I look forward to your views on student use of mobile phones during school hours, as we review our approach to ensure we have the best policy in place for our students.
