Year 10 Mathematical Art

Year 10 are currently completing an Art Project based on the linear and non-linear functions we have been studying this term. We are using the online graphing calculator DESMOS which allows students and teachers alike to quickly graph and re-graph functions that could take 10 minutes by hand.

Most of the artworks started with straight lines and now we are working with the more complex functions such as parabolas, exponentials and circles. It has been great to see students play with the equations and graphs, moving them and manipulating them to form patterns and shapes you might recognise. Here are some of the students’ artworks so far. Some of these images were captured at school before we began learning from home.

Year 9 Design and Technology Signs

The class were asked to design and build a small LED powered sign as part of the Illumination! Project. After making a simple flashing light circuit, they drew up the components of the base for the light. These plans were then sent off to be cut on a laser cutter. The students then assembled the base and installed the circuitry. The each designed their own sign to be mounted on top of the base, which were engraved on perspex using a laser cutter.

Year 8 Technology

All Year 8 Technology classes were making windchimes during Term 2. They had the opportunity to work in the timber and metal workshops to make the various sections. In the timber workshop, they shaped the timber components using the disc sander and shaped a sail out of perspex to catch the wind. In the metal workshop, they cut, drilled and filed the aluminium pipes, then added the hooks and chains to complete the project.

Year 11 Physics Fun

This term, Miss Hardy’s Year 11 Physics class has been studying their final module of the Preliminary course, “Electricity and Magnetism”. This Module explores Atomic theory and the laws of conservation of energy and electric charge. These laws are unifying concepts in understanding the electrical and magnetic properties and behaviour of matter. Students also examine how the analysis of electrical circuits’ behaviour and the transfer and conversion of energy in electrical circuits. One of the many fun practicals completed relating to Electrostatics was using the Van De Graaff Generator. A Van de Graaff generator pulls electrons from the Earth, moves them along a belt and stores them on the large sphere. The grounding rod is a smaller sphere, attached by a wire to the Earth. It provides a convenient path for electrons to move to the ground. If we bring the grounding rod close enough to the large sphere, the electrons rip through the air molecules in order to jump onto the grounding rod, creating a spark and crackling noise, just like a mini lightning strike. Year 11 had a bit of fun with this using it to shock themselves and their peers, and they even used the spark to ignite a Bunsen Burner!

Year 11 Industrial technology Timber

This Timber class has developed confidence in the workshop and had been making solid progress. Non-Construction based timber has been in short supply and we have managed to source smaller quantities on an as needs basis as we wait for orders to be delivered.

They have become more proficient in using power tools and have applied these skills to completing their project as far as circumstances would allow. We were up to completing a herringbone designed timber top when practical work ceased.

Year 11 Hospitality

Term 3 students have been studying units, Non-Alcoholic Beverages, Serve Food and Beverages, Work Effectively with Others and Use Food Preparation Equipment. Throughout the term students have been completing service periods to reflect industry realistic timeframes, preparing and serving a variety meals and beverages. During each simulated service, students are observed in their roles demonstrating a range of skills such as setting up and packing down dining spaces, greeting customers, serving customers, checking, and filling orders, and farewelling customers. Not to forget tasting a lot of food and drink items along the way.

STEM Superstars – Term 3

While quite a few students were acknowledged across KKHS in our recent faculty based Student Stars social media posts, they are so many other outstanding students doing amazing work in their STEM subjects.

We wanted to give them a shout out for the great work they have done this term.

Grace Perkins Grace has worked had to better develop her understanding of non- linear functions and how changing an equation can affect a graph. It has been great working with her online and watching the changes she is making to her artwork.

Daniel Mayer Daniel and his Nan have worked hard while online to develop a mathematical artwork which demonstrates his understanding of the relationship between the equation and graphs.

Seth Wilton Seth has worked all term on the idea of turning a Gameboy into an artwork. Nearly 100 equations later this is the result, he is still working on it so watch this space.
