YEAR 12 POST SCHOOL INTERVIEWS

Any student in Year 12 that would like to chat about their post school options, I am only too happy to be of help. Interviews are welcomed, face to face when lockdown lifts or I am only to happy to do a teleconference. Students can email me Jennifer.sellers-fogarty2@det.nsw.edu.au to arrange a convenient time. I don’t mind teleconferences after hours or in the holidays, just let me know at time that is convenient for you.

YEAR 10 SUBJECT SELECTION INTERVIEWS

It was great to meet with all Year 10 students individually and chat about their aspirations and what subjects would support them progressing forward. What a diverse group of students we have with aspirations from military to equine. It will be amazing to see these students blossom to their full potential. Students left with a document to support them when they completed their online application for subjects.

YEAR 10 SAINT NICHOLAS PROGRAM

program was scheduled to commence on the 5.8.21 has been postponed till week 6 of term 4, 8.11.21. New paperwork will be distributed to participating students. The format of this program will stay the same; student collected from KKHS using the school bus at 8.30am to commence at St Nic’s at 9am. Students will then be collected from St Nic’s at 2pm to be back at school in time for buses. This is a great opportunity for student who are interested in the Childcare and Early Education sector to gain valuable experience and insight into the industry.

SCHOOL BASED APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPS (SBATs)

This is a great way for students to achieve a recognised certifications and paid employment at the same time: Students who have submitted applications are eagerly awaiting advice as to whether they have gained an SBAT in the following areas:

WHITECARD COURSE

Another postponement is for the Whitecard course which was due to commence on the 20.8.21, this will now be split into 2 programs with the dates to be announced. Students need to watch their emails for confirmation. This is a great opportunity for students to gain their Safety Accreditation (Whitecard) as this will give them admission to construction sites which is imperative if                                                                                            they want to gain an apprenticeship.

https://www.north.com.au/careers/Apprentice-Flyer.pdf

Students need to ensure that they are checking their emails and listening when information is being read out from Sentral in their Period 1 class. Communication is vital and there are so many things happening and at times changing in the Career Space.

WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM

Work experience is a great way to compliment your studies. It will provide you with crucial knowledge and skills to learn about employer expectations and the world of work. Gaining work experience-in the  Year 10 Work Experience Program is invaluable, and during Weeks 7 to Week 10 in Term 4 will be a great opportunity for Year 10 students to participate in the KKHS Work Experience Program!

Currently in Careers, Year10 students are completing and/or refining their resumes’ all ready to present to perspective Work Experience employers. There will be 4 weeks to select from and motivated students may like to take the opportunity to go more than once. Students need to start thinking about where they would like to go and I will support them with a letter of introduction together with their resume to present to any perspective employer. If students need support finding an employer I will do my best to support them. It is really important for students to experience their chosen field of interest as the decision ‘not’ to like a career path is just as important as the student who finds their passion during work experience

Work Experience is not compulsory though is encouraged for students so they can experience what the world of work is all about.

Skills student can gain whilst on work experience:

  • Interpersonal skills: The development of interpersonal skills is vitally important and, in reality it is most effectively acquired in a workplace environment. Being able to listen and then engage with a perspective customer takes skill that is best learnt by experience.
  • Problem-Solving skills and initiative: Learning to take initiative and seeking solutions is all about being proactive. This is a skill that can be initiated and developed during work experience.
  • Time management: You will be exposed to people who will teach you to work efficiently, and who can prioritise tasks to ensure things get completed effectively. This is the time to watch and learn why prioritising tasks is so important!
  • Teamwork: Learning that you need to work together to achieve a common goal is all about teamwork. Work experience gives insight into how positive working relationships help everyone achieve a common goal!
  • Confidence: Without a doubt, the difference work experience can make to a student’s confidence can be amazing. We all know that it can be the ‘fear of the unknown’ that can hold us back! Once a student takes the initial step to procure a placement, can be the beginning of positive things to come!
  • Opportunities: Work experience can open doors! Whether it be a part time job or an apprenticeship. When a student has the opportunity to work in their chosen field special things can happen. So many times I have seen part time jobs and apprenticeships/traineeships being offered to students who have demonstrated initiative and shone during work experience.

All in all we are going to have a very busy Term 4 where I am hoping wonderful things will happen for our students!

Keep safe and remember it’s all about being ‘inspired to aspire’!
