HUB HAPPENINGS

ENGINEERING

Year 7 finished their unit on coding and moved onto investigating what it takes to be an engineer. They looked at a range of different inventions from past centuries and how improvements in technology have contributed to society in both positive and negatives ways.

Students were introduced to the engineering process - identifying a need, researching the problem, developing possible solutions, selecting the most promising solution, constructing, testing and evaluating their prototypes and redesigning if required. This is a crucial skill as we head into Project 3: How far will you go to defend your hub? where students will be developing a weapon in huddles to fight for their HUB to become the annual HUB CUP CHAMPION.

Students have been busy practicing their engineering skills while learning from home, designing and creating prototypes from recyclable materials.

Here are some of the wonderful inventions the students have been creating for you to enjoy.

 RAW CHALLENGE

On the 24th of June, Year 7 put their skills of teamwork, problem solving and decision making to the test and competed in the RAW Challenge at Doyalson. Students participated in 2km course full of obstacles and mud pits. Even though the water was freezing, they persevered and complete the course. Everyone came through the mud with smiles on their faces.

Below are testimonials from students on the day:

Ben Couperthwaite: The Raw Challenge is a place that has military mud activities that we had to do. On the day it was really cold so when we got in the mud we were freezing. After we finished the challenge, we had some lunch that the place had given us for completing the Raw Challenge. This day was one of the fun days I have had at school.

Jackson Foley: It was a super fun experience that was physical and you got a bit dirty. It was one of the best experiences I have had. I did it with all my friends in the fast group. It was so fun running through the mud and water. One of my favourite things was the giant water slide which you went flying off into a pit of cold water. I would definitely do it again.

Jorja Harris: Going to the raw challenge was a fun experience because there were so many different, fun obstacles to go on. Even though it was cold, the raw challenge was a fun experience and a great opportunity.

Ryder Howard: On the raw challenge day I was so nervous and anxious about what we were doing. We get there and we get ready to start, we start and we all head for the closed tunnels that were filled with cold water. We get to the top of the tunnels and we keep going. I was so tired running all of this but I thought of it in my head as extra fitness. At the end of the raw challenge we were all covered in mud and rock in our shoes and i had so much fun.

Jade Lynch: When I went to the raw challenge it was freezing but it was pretty fun. There were many obstacles we had to overcome, at some stages we had to walk through heaps of mud and if we weren’t careful our feet would get stuck. We had to climb over some things, go under and go through some obstacles. The course was pretty long and tiring. We were there for a long time, it was so cold going in and out the mud. There were two different groups, people who wanted to go at a faster pace and another one for people who didn’t want to go as fast. I went to the group where we went slower because I didn't feel like going at a super fast pace. After we had finished the raw challenge we had to wait around a little bit and we all got sausage sandwiches. Overall the day was pretty good, would’ve been better if it were warmer.

Abbi-Lea Robinson: In the last week of the second term, the raw challenge was held. It was an obstacle course that we had to face, it consisted of mud, ropes, tunnels, and many other things you’d have to battle to get your heart racing. If anyone I knew were to try this challenge, wear a t-shirt and tights/shorts no matter the weather. I wore a huge jumper and tracksuit pants that didn't even fit me. It was a pain in the butt the whole time. It was pretty fun since towards the end there was a huge slide. Overall it was a 6/10 experience, and I'd probably do it again.

DAILY LIFE IN LOCKDOWN BY BLUE HUB

With the snap of our fingers, almost blind-sighted, we were placed in lockdown for a week, but we all had that stirring feeling in our tummies that it was going to last longer. Despite the unknown students in blue hub were quick to engage in their online learning. Displaying high levels of resilience as they not only have been at high school for a mere 6 months then to become self directed learners. Well done to you all. Seeing blue hub in the daily check-ins, dressing up for a laugh has definitely made this time more pleasant.

The students have prepared a little outline of what a day in their life in lockdown looks like.

Giavannah Albury: I wake up at 7:00 am to get breakfast witch is normally hot chocolate and a pop tarts. Then I go to the bathroom to brush my teeth then I go to my room to get changed and brush my hair .after that I get my workspace ready for school then I get onto canvas and do my activities for that session after I get a snack then I go outside for a little bit then I come in then do my activities for that session then I have lunch and watch Netflix I get on canvas again for the last session .after the last session I go outside for about 10-15 mins then stay in my oodie while watching Netflix and playing Minecraft till dinner or until my brother forces me off.

Taylah Bow: Lockdown really sucks, my days get even worse everyday I feel like I'm going mental. I wake up at 7:30am every morning well today I woke up at 7:00am so I could write this but when I wake up its like a normal school routine but without going to school. I wake up, Then I have breakfast, today I had toast. than once I finish breakfast I brush my teeth and do my hair, today its just in a messy bun. After that's done I get dressed into something other than my school uniform to go to my first class of the day. At 8:25am I go out to the dinning room table and set up my laptop, eventually at 8:28am I join the meeting for my 8:30am start. than till 10:10am I do school work which is pretty easy than at 10:10am I have my first break and I usually have a small peace of fruit in this lunch break. than at 10:40am I join my next class meeting and complete more work until 12:20pm this is my second break. In this break I have some lunch, today I had some fried rice. at 12:50pm I go back online to my final class for the day until 2:30pm than I'm done and that's what happens every single day I swear I am going mental. I never thought I would say this, but I want to go to school.

Carla Sempf: I wake up at 8:30, my mum made makes me some pancakes to start the day off. I get onto class to start the session. I broke open my money jar a couple days ago and I had saved up $100, I had enough to buy an electric guitar that came with everything you need so obviously I bought that one. It came today and now I cant stop playing it. After I do school work I normally call my friends and play games with them.
