STUDIO SCHOOL

YEAR 9 - UNDERSTANDING OUR STRENGTHS

Year 9 have been looking at their strengths and character traits during morning check ins. This term each student has completed a VIA character assessment to discover what their top five strengths are. In the photo, a game of spider was played where each student recognises a strength that another has. When students understand theirs and each other’s strengths, they are able to move forward in life courageously, thoughtfully and deliberately towards their goals.

YEAR 10 TRANSITION

Internship Focus- Arabella Henning

Arabella was fortunate enough to do a two- week Internship at Vivid Stoneworks Thornton early in the term. This moved into a regular two day a week experience. Prior to lockdown Bella was learning many new skills. One journal entry stated the tasks and skills she performed:

  • Phone calls to customers.
  • Writing up new quotes - using MYOB writing down dimensions, looking at the drawing, calculating the price of the stone and how much the customer would need to be charged.
  • Made PDF portfolios - moved OC files to installed folder and combined them with the rest of the information on that job in the appropriate folder.
  • Rowshare - completed the jobs that were finished today and yesterday, wrote down labels for the slabs and placed stickers on them.
  • Cleaning - dishes, wiped over surfaces, cleaned glass sliding door, wiped over keyboards, phones and office desk.
  • Unpacking of deliveries.

YEAR 10 BIG PICTURE

The Year 10 Big Picture Education Advisory has been working on an Advisory Project with Kawul in Kuta Kaya during Term 3. This is involving organising a “Bake Off” which will see both classes form groups and then participate in a world class “Bake Off” to see who will be crowned champion Bakers of Kurri Kurri High School

The project will also see both classes participate in a sporting event and enjoy a delicious lunch as well.

Although, we have had to postpone our original date. Both classes are currently researching recipes and will be working on the organisation to ensure that when we return to school, we will be able to participate in this event.

YEAR 11 BIG PICTURE

The beginning of Term 3 saw some great work on projects, including a DIY Bluetooth speaker, Nutrition & Fitness plans and Experimenting with Art.

Transitioning to online learning has come with its challenges but has also given us the opportunity to engage with each other in new ways. We’ve begun doing build challenges in Minecraft, with our first challenge being to create an interesting house.

Sadly for us, we’ve said goodbye to a few students this term. Aaron has started a childcare course with St Nicks, Trinity has gained employment at a pharmacy and

Nicholas has started an apprenticeship with Chris Watson Motorcycles. While we are sad to see them go, we are pleased that they have ‘graduated’ into the world.

STAGE 6 TRANSITION

Prior to lockdown, Montanah had been continuing her internship at Mulbring Public School where she has been doing an amazing job supporting Mr O in 2/3/4. Montanah has been receiving great feedback from the staff at Mulbring and she loves being able to work with the staff and students.

Haley had also been on internship at Kurri Kurri Public School in the canteen where she was learning valuable customer service and food preparation skills.

Tenesha has been working non-stop to complete her assessments for her School Based Traineeship and continues to impress at Stone Real Estate. If anyone is looking to sell their house in the near future, Tenesha can help you out.

Chenika has spent a large amount of her time at her SBAT at Alfabs where she is doing a fantastic job in Human Resources.

Jada has recently enrolled in an online TAFE course, helping her work towards her future goals.

Jackson had been on a couple of internships with local plumbers which he enjoyed and is keen to secure a career in plumbing as a result of this and his TAFE course.

Rory, who had been on internship one to two days per week at different companies for the majority of the year completed a week with Cessnock Engineering and they were so impressed with him they offered him an apprenticeship as a fitter and machinist.

Riley had also been on internship for one or two days per week throughout the year and received a lot of positive feedback from his employers. More recently he completed two weeks internship with Shane Moss at Moss Building and Construction where he was offered an apprenticeship as a carpenter.

Both Rory and Riley were active members of our advisory and were always willing to give anything a go. We wish them all the best in their new positions. They will both be greatly missed.

The Construction boys have been working tirelessly to complete both the theory and practical components of the course and have produced some great cubby houses, dog houses and picnic tables.

As our year 12 students near the end of their schooling, some are applying for apprenticeships and traineeships and are eager to obtain full time employment.
