Year 1 News

It has been yet another big and exciting week in year 1, with lots of learning and exciting opportunities!

As inquirers, we explored the concepts of Peace and Harmony. As thinkers, we activated our prior knowledge and shared ideas about what peace means to us. We read different stories to build our understanding, and unpacked what peace and harmony in our world might look like, sound like and feel like. We discovered that a Peace Pole is a global symbol displaying the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in many languages, encouraging kindness, respect and unity. To celebrate, we engaged in whole-school assembly and prayer to unveil our Peace Pole with special guests. We went even further by decorating different symbols of peace and recording meaningful words and messages about what Peace and Harmony mean. Please come and see our creations, displayed on the window outside 1AM!

It was also Ride2School Day, and we got to enjoy an exciting treat…ice-cream!

As people of faith, we have been learning about Holy Week and unpacking the different events. We tuned in to Palm Sunday this week, learning about the significance of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, where people welcomed him with Palm Branches and praise. We activated our prior knowledge and explored images of the story through the thinking routine, Looking Ten Times Two. We listened to the story and reflected on why the crowd celebrated Jesus. As writers, we composed our own summaries of the story.

We have also been practising our songs in preparation for the Holy Thursday liturgy in week 10. Please join us after lunch in the Church, on Tuesday, 31st March, as we share the story of Holy Thursday, along with the year 4s, 5s and 6s.

As mathematicians, we explored Number Lines. As thinkers, we revised 0-10 number lines, before extending our understanding to 0-20 and 0-100 number lines. We looked at how the numbers increase and decrease and focused on locating and using benchmark numbers to help place other numbers accurately. We counted in different increments to locate numbers along the line. We created our own life-size number lines, as well as a human number line, working together to physically position different numbers.
