Year 3 Art – Bringing Landscapes to Life
This term, our Year 3 students have been exploring the wonderful world of landscape art. They have been learning about the horizon line—the place where the sky meets the land or ocean—and experimenting with a variety of drawing tools, including charcoal, crayons, watercolours, and pastels.
A key focus has been on using pastels to create realistic skies and land. Students have been learning to blend and smudge pastel marks, observing carefully to make their horizons soft and natural. They have also experimented with smudging techniques and tear-paper stencils to create smooth, layered mountains, adding depth and interest to their landscapes.
Our learning goals included:
- Identifying the horizon line in a landscape.
- Blending and smudging pastel colours to create smooth effects for the sky and land.
- Using smudging techniques to make horizons soft and realistic.
- Using torn paper stencils with black pastel to form mountains.
The results have been truly impressive! Students have produced beautiful, vibrant landscapes that show both creativity and careful observation. It’s been wonderful to see them bring their scenes to life with colour, texture, and imagination.
