Year 2 STEM – Exploring Mars with Milo the Science Rover
The last two weeks, our Year 2 students have been collaborating and exploring the planet Mars using the LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0 kit and app. Their mission: to code Milo the Science Rover to search for life and collect rock samples from the Red Planet!
As part of their Mars mission, students discovered some fascinating facts about the planet: Mars has the largest volcano in our solar system, Olympus Mons, and scientists believe there is ice water on its polar caps.
Students are currently learning to design and build a grabber to attach to Milo. Using their engineering and coding skills, they are programming Milo to detect rock samples on Mars, collect them with the grabber, and safely return to home base.
Our learning goals include:
- Designing and building a grabber to attach to Milo.
- Coding Milo to detect rock samples on Mars.
- Programming Milo to collect the sample using the grabber.
- Returning Milo safely to home base with the collected sample.
It has been exciting to see students work together, problem-solve, and bring their Mars mission to life through coding and hands-on engineering. Their curiosity and teamwork have made this a truly out-of-this-world STEM experience!
