What’s Happening in Science?
It has been another busy and rewarding term in the Science Department, with students taking their learning beyond the classroom through competitions, industry partnerships, specialist programs and hands-on scientific experiences.
Hydrogen Grand Prix
Our Year 9 and 10 Hydrogen Grand Prix(H2GP) teams have been putting their STEM skills into action this term.
The H2GP program challenges students to design, develop and race hydrogen fuel-cell-powered vehicles.
Students worked collaboratively on engineering design, vehicle performance, energy efficiency and race strategy, while developing an understanding of hydrogen technology and its potential role in future energy systems.
After considerable preparation, students had the opportunity to put their designs and strategies to the test in competition.
The program has provided an excellent authentic STEM experience, combining science, engineering, technology, teamwork and problem-solving in a highly engaging environment.
Our Year 10 team led for most of the four-hour endurance race and were able to finish 2nd overall. We are extremely proud of the way our students represented Scoresby and approached the challenge.
Outstanding Success in the Coca-Cola Industry Partnership
Another highlight of the term was the outstanding performance of our students in the Coca-Cola Industry Partnership Challenge.
Students were challenged to respond to a real-world problem provided by Coca-Cola, developing their ideas through research, collaboration, problem-solving and design thinking before presenting their proposed solutions to an industry assessment panel.
Our students performed exceptionally well, with Scoresby teams achieving first and second place overall.
The Coca-Cola assessors were incredibly impressed by the quality of our students’ ideas, presentations and ability to respond to questions. Their success was a wonderful reflection of the creativity, teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills they brought to the challenge.
Congratulations to all of the students involved in representing Scoresby so positively.
Year 12: Preparing for the Final Stretch
Our Year 12 students are now entering the final stages of preparation for their end-of-year examinations.
Across our senior Science subjects, students have been completing practice assessments and using detailed formative feedback to identify areas for improvement, strengthen their subject knowledge and refine their examination technique.
We wish all of our Year 12 Science students well as they approach the final weeks of their secondary studies.
Year 12 Chemistry VCE Masterclass
Our Year 12 Chemistry students recently attended a VCE Chemistry Masterclass atKIOSC, providing them with access to advanced analytical chemistry technologies and techniques that are not typically available within a school laboratory.
The experience complemented their Unit 4 studies and allowed students to see how the concepts and analytical techniques studied in VCE Chemistry are applied using sophisticated scientific equipment.
Experiences such as these provide an important connection between classroom learning and the ways chemistry is used in scientific, university and industry settings.
Welcoming Our Future Scientists
We also had the pleasure of welcoming Grade 5 students from local primary schools into our Science laboratories during the term.
Students participated in a range of hands-on activities designed to introduce them to the engaging and practical Science experiences available at Scoresby.
Their enthusiasm, questions and curiosity were wonderful to see, and we hope the experience helped inspire the next generation of young scientists.
Looking Ahead
Term 3 has showcased the breadth of Science learning taking place at Scoresby. From senior students preparing for their final examinations to younger students tackling authentic industry and engineering challenges, our students have had opportunities to apply their knowledge, collaborate with others and engage with Science beyond the traditional classroom.
We congratulate our students on their achievements throughout the term and look forward to continuing this momentum in Term 4.
