Year 6 Newsletter – Week 2 Update It has been a fantastic start to the term, with students returning refreshed and ready to learn. They have quickly settled back into routines and are showing great enthusiasm across all areas of the curriculum. Reading In Reading, students have been analysing and critiquing a range of persuasive texts. A key focus has been examining Greta Thunberg’s United Nations climate change speech, where students identified and discussed persuasive devices such as repetition and emotive language. They are developing a deeper understanding of how authors influence audiences and are becoming more confident in expressing their own interpretations and opinions about texts. Writing In Writing, students are exploring persuasive writing, with a focus on understanding the purpose behind persuasive campaigns and advertisements. They are learning how to structure arguments effectively, use strong evidence, and apply persuasive language techniques to influence their audience. It has been great to see students beginning to form strong opinions and support them with thoughtful reasoning. Numeracy In Numeracy, students are building their understanding of multiplicative strategies. They have been learning how to multiply 2–4 digit numbers using methods such as the box strategy, as well as exploring cube numbers. There has also been a strong focus on solving worded problems, helping students apply their mathematical knowledge in real-world contexts. Students are showing increasing confidence in selecting and applying appropriate strategies. Swimming week / inter-school sports Our Year 6 swimmers have been engaging in their lessons this week, and are having the most fun down at the pool. They are learning essential skills whilst enjoying time with friends. Students are also eagerly preparing for next week’s inter-school sports. They have been actively training and developing their skills in T-ball, AFL, netball, and soccer. It has been wonderful to see their teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship during practice sessions, and we look forward to seeing them represent the school with pride. We look forward to another engaging and productive week ahead.
