Kingston Koorie Mob

Acknowledgement of Country.

Patterson River Secondary College is situated on Carrum Carrum swamp a site of historical and cultural significance. We respectfully acknowledge the traditional custodians of this area, the Bunurong and we pay our respects to their Elders both past, present and future, for they hold the memories, traditions, culture and hopes of Indigenous Australians. We also extend our respect to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families.

Koorie Events

Wominjeka,

It’s been a busy start to the term for our Mob, with participation in two significant events that I’d like to share. In Week 2, we visited the St Kilda Football Club in Moorabbin, where Aunty Katrina shared her inspiring story of growing up in a supportive family. She spoke about her journey fighting for First Nations rights before and after the 1968 referendum. Aunty Katrina also discussed her role as the Inclusive Indigenous Coordinator at St Kilda FC, where she supports football players, officials, and other clubs. It was inspiring to see her passion for her work.

The following week, we attended a Council workshop focused on redeveloping our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). We shared our local youth experiences as First Nations students, highlighting the support we need from Council and identifying priorities to be addressed or included in the next RAP. We also provided students with an interactive bushwalk-and-talk workshop on cultural heritage and native plant life, led by two Aboriginal experts. Afterward, we enjoyed a deadly feed and received bags of goodies from Blak businesses.

It’s been an enriching start to the term, and we look forward to continuing our journey together.
