STEM Expo

After a term of planning and construction, the Year 10 STEM students put on a fantastic exhibition of their work. The students presented their models and creations to a huge number of staff and students throughout the Expo. There were many comments from staff about the wonderful devices the class had made. Many of the models incorporated the use of electronics and mechanical components. Students even made clothing and remote-control cars. All the STEM projects were developed using STEM principles and then created by every student. The students had to learn a large number of new skills to produce their projects. The skills ranged from electronics to sewing. The work was outstanding. I am so proud of the work the students produced and hope to make this a yearly occurrence in the future. Well done year ten STEM!

Year 10 Science

Year 10 Students in Mrs Janif’s class had some unusual homework for Science class this week, where they had to bake cookies from one of four selected recipes.  The activity allowed students to model genetics, where the cookie recipes represented a ‘gene’ from DNA and the different version of recipes, represented ‘alleles’. 

Students enjoyed their ‘delicious culinary’ experience analysing why cookies may appear similar even though they were produced using different recipes and yet cookies produced by the same recipe, often looked very different!  It was a wonderful and fun way to start our new topic looking at the relationships between DNA and inheritance. Well done to all  our Science students who were brave and perhaps baked for the first time!

Year 8 Science

On the 4th of June, my class and I took part in the dissection of a sheep’s heart in science. During this term we have been studying biology, we worked on the biological levels of organisation. Which are atom, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, and organism. We also worked on multiple organ systems like the circulatory system. The heart dissection was an incredible opportunity for my peers and I to better our understanding of the heart and how it pumps blood throughout our bodies. Prior to the dissection we had to complete an education perfect task surrounding how to dissect and dispose of the sheep’s heart properly and safely. For the actual dissection we had to make an incision on the very bottom of the heart and then continue the cut around the heart on either side. After the dissection we had to draw and label all the parts of the hearts. Overall, it was a unique opportunity that my classmates and I are extremely grateful for.
