Level 1

Welcome back to Term 4!
We hope everyone had a wonderful break and enjoyed some time to relax, recharge and have fun. It’s hard to believe how quickly the year is flying by and that we’re already heading into our final term of Grade 1! We have such a fun-filled, busy and exciting term ahead, with plenty of opportunities to learn new things, challenge ourselves, work together and make some wonderful memories.
We can’t wait to see what we achieve together!
Inquiry
In Inquiry this term, students will be exploring 'Health Messages and Healthy Choices'.
This fortnight, we’ve been learning important ways to keep ourselves safe and knowing what to do when we need help. Through our safety activities and discussions, we’ve explored who we can turn to when we feel worried, get hurt or find ourselves in an uncomfortable situation. We created our own Trusted Adult Hands to identify the safe adults we can ask for help, and practised what we might say when we need support. We’ve also been learning about 'medicine and household product safety', including how to recognise warning labels and why medicines should only be handled or taken with help from a trusted adult.
Literacy
We’ve been diving into the wonderful world of stories and discovering how authors bring their settings to life! Using Once Upon a Small Rhinoceros, we’ve explored different settings, from the savannah to other places the little rhinoceros visits. We’ve been practising using clues from words and pictures to describe where a story takes place, choosing interesting adjectives and thinking about what characters might see, hear and feel. We’ve also been learning how to make our descriptions even more detailed by combining words to create expanding noun groups, such as the messy, mud-splashing rhino! We’ve put our learning into practice by creating our own imaginative stories, thinking carefully about characters, settings, problems and solutions. Our young authors are developing some wonderful ways to bring their ideas to life!
Numeracy
In Maths, we’ve been revisiting place value and exploring how we can organise, represent and rename numbers in different ways. We explored how grouping objects into groups of ten makes large collections much easier to count and helps us keep track without missing or double-counting anything. We’ve also been placing numbers on number lines, using landmark numbers to help us decide where they belong, and practising jumps of one and ten. We then explored how numbers can be partitioned and renamed without changing their value. For example, 43 can be shown as 4 tens and 3 ones, or 3 tens and 13 ones! We’ve been using hands-on materials, drawings and number sentences to show our thinking and explain how we know our answers are correct. It’s been wonderful seeing the different strategies our mathematicians are using!
Hats & Sunscreen
Please remember that our Sun Smart policy requires all students to wear a wide-brimmed hat when playing outside for the whole of Term 4. Please ensure your child brings their hat to school each day. Students are also welcome to bring a named roll-on sunscreen to keep at school, if they haven’t already provided one. Please make sure it is clearly labelled with your child’s name.
