Level 5

Celebrations
Congratulations to our Level 5/6 Softball Teams, who competed in the Maroondah Division Finals on Wednesday. Both teams played amazingly! Huge congratulations to the Girls Team, who won and will move onto Regional Finals.
Congratulations to William He who won first prize in a category of the 2026 Friends of the Australian National Botanic Gardens (FANBG) annual photography competition. We are all very proud of him and excited to see what other wonderful things he will photograph next.
Literacy
Our Level 5 students have been exploring how songwriters use language, figurative language, powerful vocabulary and song structure to communicate messages, influence audiences and reflect the world around them. By analysing song lyrics, students are learning to look beyond the literal meaning of words and consider the songwriter’s purpose and perspective.
Students are now applying these skills to create their own song lyrics about issues that matter to them, such as friendship, resilience, fairness and the environment. Through this process, they are developing their skills as thoughtful readers, purposeful writers and confident communicators.
Numeracy
Our Level 5 students have been getting hands-on with geometry and exploring the world of shapes! They have been investigating 3D shapes and their nets, as well as using Play-Doh to discover how cutting objects in different ways creates different cross-sections.
Students have also been developing their mapping skills by working with Cartesian planes and alphanumeric grids. They have been learning to identify the X and Y axes, plot coordinates in the correct order and create their own shapes using coordinates. Along the way, we have revisited area and explored surface area, volume, compass directions and how objects can look different from different viewpoints.
It has been great to see students getting hands-on, testing their ideas and building their mathematical understanding through practical activities and problem-solving!
Inquiry - Healthy Choices in an Influential World
Our Level 5 students have been learning about health and where we can find information to help us make healthy choices. They shared ideas about different sources, including doctors, websites, social media and influencers. Students have been using our TRUST checklist to help them decide whether health information is reliable and worth following. Together, we explored why just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s reliable! These skills will help students make more informed choices about their health and wellbeing, both online and in everyday life.
Hats and Sunscreen
A friendly reminder that students require hats from September to April in accordance with the Education Department's Sunsmart Policy. Students are also welcome to bring a named roll-on sunscreen to keep at school, if they haven’t already provided one. Please make sure it is clearly labelled with your child’s name.
