Level 4

Welcome back!
Welcome back to a new and exciting Term 4! The students and teachers have settled in well and we have begun our new topics of learning. We have loved hearing about everyone's holidays and all the fun stories that came from the adventures people had.
Literacy
This term we are revisiting Persuasive writing. We will be focusing on Health and Safety as part of our Inquiry unit, and zooming in on important issues within this topic through our Literacy block. Last week the Level 4's explored what health and safety means, using the lens of food health, such as the star rating system, and this week we have been exploring how physical health impacts people.
This week, students co-constructed a persuasive piece, using T.E.E.L. Students worked in groups to create a topic sentence, explanation, find evidence and link the reason back to the topic.
We have also continued our Book Clubs this term. Some grades have continued on with their novel from last term, while others are moving onto a new novel study. The students are engaging with weekly analysis tasks, where they are developing the skills to look deeper into a text. We have also begun fluency pairs which is providing students with the opportunity to read aloud with their fluency partner. This is proving to be a wonderful way for the students to hear others read, practise their tone of voice, volume and character voices, and adjust their pace. We encourage parents to continue this practice at home, to help support what we are doing in the classroom.
Numeracy
This term we are revisiting most of the topics we have learned throughout the year. We began the term with a focus on algebra, specifically balancing equations and finding unknown values using variables. The students enjoyed determining what value is unknown and using a variety of strategies to solve the problem.
This week we are introducing BIDMAS. This topic may be familiar to families, as it goes by many names (BODMAS, BIDMAS, BOMDAS). Put simply, it is a way of solving equations following a process. If you would like to support your child's learning at home, you can be creating different equations that use the four operations and include some brackets for them to have a go at solving it!
Inquiry
This term our topic focuses on Health and Safety. Last week, students learned all about the health star ratings at the supermarket and how to make informed and healthy food choices using the star ratings. Students also learned how to use the nutritional tables on packaging to help determine what is an appropriate serving size and what is the most healthy choice to make when comparing similar products.
This term, the Level 4's have the opportunity to engage with First Aid, as part of health safety. The students will be learning about breathing and airways and how to respond to situations that involve these things. More information will come out soon, so keep an eye on Compass.
