Year Six

Fractional Thinking

To start the term, Year Six students have been exploring fractional concepts. They have developed their knowledge of equivalent fractions using materials such as Cuisenaire rods and geometric shapes. Students in 6GU and 6HB enthusiastically used number lines, area models and bar models to investigate the relationship between proper and improper fractions, supporting their ability to convert between the two forms.

Students also made connections to their previous unit on multiplicative thinking by applying their knowledge of factors and multiples to simplify fractions and generate equivalent fractions. They have continued to deepen their understanding of the size of fractions by comparing and ordering fractions using models such as number lines.

Next week, students will extend their learning by making connections between fractions, decimals and percentages through a range of hands-on measurement tasks.
