Measuring Length in Year Two

This term, our Year Two students have begun a maths unit where students will explore the world of measurement through a range of fun, hands-on learning experiences. Through this unit, students will be developing their understanding of length, mass and capacity by investigating and comparing objects in meaningful, everyday contexts.

Students began the unit learning to use a variety of informal units to measure and compare the length of different objects. They are discovering that measurement is much more than simply finding an answer - it involves estimation, making careful observations, choosing appropriate tools, and making comparisons by explaining their thinking.

Students have practised measuring items using informal units, such as Unifix blocks and popsicle sticks, and then comparing and discussing their results. Through these activities, they are learning that the size of the measuring unit affects the number of units needed, helping them understand why choosing an appropriate unit is important.

Students extended their learning by estimating, measuring and comparing their own height and jump length using informal units. They discussed why different units can produce different results and explained which units are most suitable for particular tasks.

Following on from their investigations on length, students will explore mass and capacity through practical activities. They will compare the weight of everyday objects by using balance scales and explore which containers hold more or less by experimenting with sand and other materials. These experiences encourage students to describe and compare measurements using mathematical language while developing their problem-solving and reasoning skills.

By the end of this learning sequence, students will be more confident in describing the attributes of length, mass and capacity, selecting appropriate measuring tools, and explaining their measurement strategies.
