Year 1

Year 1 Space Unit
This term, our Year 1 students have absolutely loved learning all about Space! It has been such an exciting and engaging topic, with students showing so much curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the unit.
As part of our learning, we explored the difference between day and night and investigated why this happens. Students enjoyed discovering how the Earth moves and how this affects what we see in the sky.
We also explored the phases of the moon, learning how the moon appears to change shape over time, and worked together to order the planets in our solar system. Students loved building their understanding of where each planet belongs and what makes them unique.
In Literacy, we linked our Space learning across a range of writing genres. Students created informative pieces to share facts they had learned, persuasive pieces to convince others which is their favourite season and why, and wrote a retell to explain the events that occurred in our mentor text ‘Joe and the stars’.
One of the highlights of the unit was our exciting Cosmodome incursion. This was a fantastic hands-on experience that brought our learning to life and gave students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the wonders of Space in a fun and memorable way.
It has been wonderful to see the students so engaged, curious and eager to learn throughout this unit. Perhaps we have some future astronauts amongst us!
