Year 5

It’s been a wonderful start to the year in Year 5, and the students have settled in beautifully. We have enjoyed some fantastic 'hands‑on' experiences, especially in the garden, where students have been planting vegetables for our kitchen garden. A definite highlight was meeting Frederick the bull calf and having the chance to feed him his bottle — an experience the students won’t forget anytime soon!
This term, Year 5 also had the opportunity to apply their growing knowledge and skills in the National Achievement Tests of Literacy and Numeracy. We encouraged students to focus on doing their personal best, approaching each task with confidence and a positive mindset. While these assessments provide useful information, they are only one part of the bigger picture — a snapshot of a moment in time. We continue to value the many other ways students show their learning, growth, and strengths throughout the year.
In English, we have been diving into Tom Appleby, Convict Boy, which has sparked rich discussions about life in the past and supported students to develop their inference and comprehension skills. They have also been working on their narrative writing, focusing on adding detail and crafting more engaging ideas for their readers.
In Mathematics, we have been exploring decimals, problem‑solving, and different types of data. It’s been wonderful to see students growing in confidence and openly sharing their strategies and thinking with others.
Our students have also embraced new sporting skills through our Year 5 sports program, particularly in hockey and netball. Their teamwork, coordination, and sportsmanship continue to shine.
It has been a busy and rewarding term, with the children continuing to build their independence, collaboration, and positive approach to learning in the senior school!
