As our Year 8 students approach their upcoming assessment block, we would like to acknowledge their hard work, dedication, and focused effort in preparing for these tasks. It has been wonderful to see them engaging with their coursework and taking proactive steps to consolidate their learning.
To equip students with practical tools for success, our recent Pastoral lesson was dedicated to exploring effective study techniques, focusing on active engagement, breaking topics into manageable chunks, and building consistent routines. Students were introduced to a variety of strategies to help them prepare with confidence, including:
Active Recall & Retrieval Practice
- Flashcards: Write a question or key term on one side and the definition/answer on the other. Use platforms like Quizlet or physical index cards to test yourself instead of just re-reading.
- Practice Questions: Answer textbook questions, past quiz problems, or self-generated questions without looking at notes first.
- Blurting Method: Read a topic for 10–15 minutes, close the book, and write down or draw everything remembered on a blank sheet of paper. Compare notes to spot missing info.
Time Management & Organization
- Pomodoro Technique: Study in focused 25-minute blocks followed by a 5-minute break. After 4 cycles, take a longer 15–30 minute break to keep energy high.
- Study Schedule: Assign specific subjects to set days of the week rather than trying to study everything at once.
Synthesis & Summarization
- Mind Mapping: Draw visual diagrams linking main ideas to sub-topics, especially for subjects like Science, History, or Geography.
- Feynman Technique: Explain a concept out loud in simple, plain language as if teaching it to a younger student or classmate. If you get stuck, review the parts you couldn't explain.
- Cornell Note-Taking System: Divide page margins into main cues/questions on the left, detailed notes on the right, and a 2-3 sentence summary at the bottom.
Environment & Mindset
- Minimize Distractions: Put phones in another room or set them to Do Not Disturb while studying.
- Dedicated Workspace: Keep a clean, quiet desk with proper lighting and necessary supplies ready before starting.
Alongside effective study habits, prioritizing student wellbeing is key to achieving peak performance. We encourage our Year 8 students to care for themselves throughout this busy period by maintaining a balanced routine:
- Restorative Sleep: Getting a full night’s sleep to ensure minds are sharp and ready to focus.
- Healthy Habits: Fueling up with nutritious meals and staying hydrated throughout the day.
- Active Brain Breaks: Engaging in regular physical activity or step outside for a reset between revision sessions.
We are very proud of the cohort's ongoing commitment and positive attitude. Should students require extra academic guidance or a quiet environment to study, Homework Club is available every Wednesday afternoon from 3:00 to 4:00pm in the College Learning Centre.
Keep up the great work, Year 8!
