Our students will enjoy this one!

VISUAL LITERACY

During one of our Professional Learning Team (PLT) meetings this week, staff engaged in dialogue around the importance of visual literacy and supporting students in ‘reading the images.’ The research shows that a focus on the development of visual literacy strategies not only develops reading comprehension skills but also fosters a deeper love of literature.

MENTOR TEXTS & SHARED STORIES

Teachers draw on a range of rich, mentor texts during Literacy time and throughout the day. This is even more so the case in the lead up to Shared Stories.

Mentor texts are written pieces that serve as an example of good writing for our students. The texts are often read for the purpose of studying the author's craft; the way authors use particular words, structures or techniques to engage and capture their audience. The goal is to provide students with a model they could emulate in crafting their own piece.

Teachers’ clever use of mentor texts inspires and supports students in creating high quality pieces of writing, many of which will be published in the Shared Stories anthology this year.

Olivia Quinlan

Literacy Leader/Teaching and Learning The Student Leadership Program provides opportunities for student voice, the development of student leadership skills and encourages active participation in the decision making processes. Our philosophy is to prepare our students to be future leaders in the community.

Develop and demonstrate leadership skills over time

* To develop and promote student voice within our school community through SRC from P-6.

* Apply leadership skills to school initiatives and programs through our Year 6 leadership program.

* Contribution to a caring, safe environment through the buddy program across year levels.

Leadership for Students in Foundation to Year 5

Students in Foundation to Year 5 are given the opportunity to vote for two students each semester to represent their class voice during SRC meetings.

Leadership in Year 6

During Term 4 of Year 5 all students in Year 5 participate in a program called SuperSpeak. This program prepares our student leaders for their leadership speeches to be presented in front of the Year 3, 4 and 6 cohorts. Students vote using a google form for each participant and are given the opportunity to give their top two preferences based on a specific criteria.

SRC Leaders Semester 2, 2022

Class

Student Leaders

Foundation

Sofia DC & Grace H

Year 1J

Teddy P & Gwen B

Year 2F

Skye P & Dolly B

3/4C

Ethan C & Mila P

3/4B

Hugh H & Tilly J

3/4CC

Tia Q & Jason B

5FF

Lenni G, Nieve R & Jack R

SRC Leaders Semester 1, 2022

Class

Student Leaders

Foundation

Mila G & Lucy D

Year 1J

Sophie T & Ethan H

Year 2F

Jade P & Annie S

3/4C

Ella K & Poppy H

3/4B

Madison C & Tilayo S

3/4CC

Thomas M & Sebastian G

5FF

Bella P & Noah S

Year 6

During term 2 in Year 6 we worked incredibly hard in our Inquiry topic, Geography. We started off the unit by labelling everything we know about the world and watching a video to spark our interest. We then were able to write down some wonderings we each had, then created a wonderings wall, where for homework we were able to take one of the questions home each week, research and answer. These answers were placed on the wall. This was a great way to see everything we learned throughout the topic.

During the topic we discovered more about the world , the oceans, countries and continents often starting the day by playing the game Global. We really enjoyed guessing the country and learning more about the world we live in.

We also put our technological skills to use and created a website from scratch using Weebly. On these websites we were able to share with our audience everything we knew, learned and researched about our countries. We are just loving getting to know her and are all enjoying the extra special newborn cuddles.

Thanks for the many well wishes from St James!!

Danielle and Tim

SURPRISE NEWS RECEIVED TODAY!

Baby Sophie McCarthy Featherstone

Born 20th July at 2.59pm

Weight 3kgs

Congratulations to Lisa and Gary and best wishes on the early arrival of baby Sophie.

COVID Safety news

This week you would have received further safety information. Can I thank families for your support to ensure that we are as free of COVID as we can be. I have included another update to assist you in our collective position.

Reduction of testing and isolation exemption period

The period of time when someone is considered a recently confirmed case and therefore exempt from testing and isolation requirements has been reduced from the previous 12 weeks to four weeks.

This means that staff and students who are household contacts of people with COVID-19 are not exempt from the testing and isolation requirements after four weeks of completing isolation with COVID-19. Previously, this period was 12 weeks.

This means that a student or staff member who is a household contact and wishes to attend school must take five RATs over seven days and receive negative test results, and wear a face mask (if over eight years old) in indoor spaces. This applies from four weeks after the end of an isolation period when they were a case.

Families and staff will also have to report being a household contact to their school after this four-week period.

To date we have navigated the disruption that the recent COVID and flu spread. I ask you to appreciate that we may at times need to be flexible in how we cover sudden staff absences due to illness. The bank of emergency replacement in all schools is very thin and in some places non existent. There may be times where children's classes will be combined etc . To this point we have been very fortunate. I ask for your patience and understanding if we have unwanted disruption.

Faith in our future

Brendan
{"5zzoXg5":"Sophie
{"N9RnRLJ":"Meredith

Message from Co-Chairs

Connie Sands & Virginia Pullman

Welcome back to term 3 from the PA team.

It looks like many families managed to get away during the break and have some time out -
