BOOK WEEK

Teachers and students are already exploring the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) shortlisted texts for 2022. There are some early favourites!

To help us celebrate the inspiring work of authors, illustrators and publishers, whilst continuing to nurture a love for reading, we will be celebrating Book Week in Week 7.

dress up day will be held on Friday 26th August, where students are invited to dress up as a beloved book character, author, illustrator or in a costume related to this year’s theme; Dreaming with Eyes Open.

There will be a parade in the morning in the main yard, at 9.15am (weather permitting) which families are invited to attend.

On this day, students will also participate in activities with author/illustrator Mark Wilson. A big thank you to Ann Nicola, our librarian, for organising this special incursion. Our students will enjoy this one!

VISUAL  LITERACY

During one of our Professional Learning Team (PLT) meetings this week, staff engaged in dialogue around the importance of visual literacy and supporting students in ‘reading the images.’ The research shows that a focus on the development of visual literacy strategies not only develops reading comprehension skills but also fosters a deeper love of literature.

MENTOR TEXTS & SHARED STORIES

Teachers draw on a range of rich, mentor texts during Literacy time and throughout the day.  This is even more so the case in the lead up to Shared Stories.

Mentor texts are written pieces that serve as an example of good writing for our students. The texts are often read for the purpose of studying the author's craft; the way authors use particular words, structures or techniques to engage and capture their audience. The goal is to provide students with a model they could emulate in crafting their own piece.

Teachers’ clever use of mentor texts inspires and supports students in creating high quality pieces of writing, many of which will be published in the Shared Stories anthology this year.
