As Term 3 has progressed so has a number of the Blackburn High School teams to further stages of sporting competitions. The year 7 and 8 students have continued to show success in all areas of the sporting domain. The hard work and enthusiasm shown by each and every student has allowed us to enter record breaking numbers of teams in the Whitehorse competitions.

Thank you to the students, staff and guardians for making this all possible. The amount of support that has been shown by all, whether it be signing up to participate, completing consent on XUNO, coaching or monitoring student/staff absences. This all goes a long way, and it wouldn’t be possible for the students to be so successful without this opportunity.

Year 7 Boys SSV Hockey

On Tuesday, 6th September 13 very enthusiastic Year 7 boys played in the SSV Whitehorse Division Hockey round robin at Koonung SC. In a very competitive first round game against the hosts, BHS managed a goal in the first half and defiantly held onto the lead thanks to the rock-solid defensive unit of Iggy Castor, Jeremy Bryant and Jake Christianson in goal. Jaxon Nilaweera, Nian Chiong and Joe Kneebone were creative and hard working in the midfield while Louis Driver and Asher Rhodes were dangerous as strikers. BHS were dominant in the final game, controlling possession in our forward half and keeping the East Doncaster defence and goalkeeper very busy with attack after attack. Thank you to Year 10 student, Hunter Pfeiffer, who provided his hockey expertise in his role as coach. BHS look forward to the next challenge, EMR in Term 4.

Year 7 Boys State AFL Report

Game 1

The undefeated Year 7 boys AFL team took to Trinity Oval on the 12th of August to challenge Shepardson’s Notre Dame College at the State Quarter Finals. The boys were excited and nervous as the greatly anticipated match had finally arrived. Led by student coaches Ned Jones and Ryan O’Sullivan the team was hungry for another win on the board.

Our boys entered the game strong, creating a 25-point lead with key midfielder Charlie Wilson kicking 3 goals. The fierce determination of the boys was evident as they continuously ran the Notre Dame players down, allowing crucial turn overs and advancement of the ball. Our backline locked the ball down ensuring nothing got past.

Although met with injuries, the year 7’s managed to maintain the lead and solidify their spot in Semi-finals playing Frankston High for a spot in the Grand Final

Game 2

After an hour-long match and only a 40-minute break, the boys entered the field once more to fight for their spot in the Grand Final.

It was a low-scoring first quarter as both teams struggled to create space, jumping on top of the ball at every opportunity. It was evident that the boys were tired, but they continued to play hard and fight for possession of the ball. As each quarter passed, Frankston’s lead grew slightly larger until our boys were hit with a brutal blow with key forward Jacob and Ruck Kai joining Injured Charlie Wilson on the bench for the rest of the game. Unfortunately, it was not our day, and the boys were greeted with their first defeat after 8 games of football versing highly competitive schools within our district, region and state.

I could not be prouder of the boy’s performance across the year as we received constant praise from opponents, parents, and officiants about the boy’s skill and sportsmanship throughout the competition. Well done boys!
