Green Team x Simply Cups

The Blackburn High School Green Team has partnered with 7-Eleven and Simply Cups to run a Cup Rescue disposable cup recycling program at Blackburn. Single-use cups are usually not able to be recycled as they contain a thin plastic lining, but the Cup Rescue program stops them from entering landfill and turns them into products like outdoor furniture.

In Term 4, recycling units like the one shown below will be appearing around the school, to enable the sustainable disposal of empty hot chocolate, coffee, and paper Slurpee cups. Once the tubes are full, they will be emptied, and the contents sent for recycling.

Ultimately, although the Cup Rescue program will save some cups from landfill, we want to avoid using single-use cups as much as possible. Some better alternatives are Keep Cups and other thermos cups, which can be purchased from your local supermarket. Most cafes are happy to make a hot drink in them, so where possible, think reusable first – but for those days you just can’t resist a hot chocolate, now you can still make a sustainable choice!
