Humanities

It’s been another big term in the Humanities Learning Area! I want to take the time to thank our staff for their continued efforts with delivering an enriching Humanities curriculum and to our students for the enthusiasm with which they participate in our subjects.

In early September we had the huge undertaking of getting our Year 7 Humanities cohort out of the classroom to participate in geography fieldwork.

Our students journeyed to Yarra Bend to collect and process geographical data for their assessment task. It was great to see all students getting involved and enjoying the beautiful surroundings of the parklands. Thank you to all students for their participation and to the staff who accompanied everyone on the excursion.

An especially big thank you to Mr Butler for organising this day and ensuring our Geography curriculum is grounded in real world experience.

Another great Geography excursion happened for our Year 9 ‘How to be an Explorer’ group. This inaugural class ventured into the Melbourne CBD to investigate tourism. This was a fantastic opportunity to apply geographic concepts across the city and Queen Victoria Market. Thank you to all students for their involvement and to Mr Cousins for creating an opportunity for students to practice their fieldwork skills.

Last but not least, our Unit 1/2 Philosophy students went to the Melbourne Zoo as part of their community enquiry into whether zoos are ethical in the 21st century. It was a day rich with intelligent discussion and reflection from our students. Well done to the philosophy class for their enquiry and sophisticated analysis. Thank you to Ms. Ghiotti for organising the day for students and continuing to develop fervour for the subject at our school.

I look forward to Term 4 being another busy and productive term for the Humanities Learning Area.
