State Table Tennis

On Friday 25th November, four of our best Year 8 table tennis players went to MSAC in Melbourne to compete in the table tennis state finals. The team played against three other schools, the first being Mt Waverly Secondary College. The team played well and with Max Henderson’s superior smashing, Louis Wood’s ability to adapt to his opponent, Noah Willits’s amazing comebacks, and Oliver McKenzie’s persistence, the team was able to secure a win.

Up next was Hume Central Secondary College. The boys played some extremely experienced players but put up a good fight. Both the singles and the doubles were close. Unfortunately, not even Girton’s fearless four were quite able to secure the win, but the score sheets were very even. A matter of points and the victory could have been ours.

In all honesty, nothing could have prepared the team for the final showdown against Carranballac. Their players formed an unstoppable team, some of whom were kitted out with table tennis shoes and special spray to give their bat more spin. After a slight thrashing the team’s spirits were still high, and they were proud of their performance and better for the experience.

Although the team may not have returned as state champions, they did return as Girton champions. All who competed are commended for a mighty effort.
