From the Head of Senior School

We are in the final two weeks of the term, which have become very busy in the lead-up to the last day of term. Last week I had the pleasure of attending my first Girton Christmas Carol service with Jenkin House. It was a beautiful balmy evening with highlights that included performances by the Junior and Senior School students and the laying of gifts for the children of flood-affected communities. The word 'carol' means dance or a song of praise and joy. Originally, carols were written and sung during all four seasons, but only the tradition of singing them at Christmas has survived. While the actual origin of caroling as a part of our Christmas celebration is unknown, several countries have claimed to be the birthplace of the custom. However, from the beginning, music of some kind was a part of the Church festivities in honor of the birth of Jesus.

This week saw the culmination of the end of term with the Senior and Junior School Speech Nights. These events are designed to recognise the efforts of our students for Co-curricular Excellence in a given activity, Citizenship for students who consistently act with kindness, humility, and respect towards others, and Emotional Intelligence. The latter awards are given to students who uphold the values of our School Charter and epitomise social and emotional learning at Girton. Our gratitude is extended to the families who contributed to the Citizenship awards and is much appreciated.

Taking time to relax and rest during the holiday break is important for students and staff. Although our programming at the School has continued until the end of the year, it is essential that students take the time to ‘fill their cup’ with things they enjoy and obtain a good night’s sleep. Without this rest, students can struggle to navigate the next school year. Lack of sleep can result in poor concentration, irritability, aches and pains, and a weakened immune system. The following websites have some great tips and tricks for those struggling to achieve a good night’s sleep:

I want to thank all staff, students, and parents for making me feel welcome and settled at Girton in my first year. My Christmas break will see me return to Western Australia to catch up with family and friends. I would like to extend my heartfelt wishes to the Girton Community in wishing you a safe and restful Christmas break.
