MIDDLE SCHOOL | Update
Dear Years 9 and 10 Parents/Carers and Students
Welcome to Term 3, a term where we focus on our school pillar of Aspiration as students begin planning their pathways and selecting subjects for 2027.
Before looking ahead, I would like to celebrate two significant milestones from the final week of Term 2, our Year 10 Work Experience Program and the Year 9 Upskills Program.
Year 10 Work Experience
Our Year 10 students completed work experience across an incredibly diverse range of industries, providing valuable insight into future careers and pathways. Placements included education and early childhood, healthcare and allied health, veterinary science and animal care, construction and the skilled trades, electrical and plumbing, engineering, automotive, hospitality and retail, hair and beauty, legal services, real estate, local government, sport and recreation, music and the creative industries, agriculture, information technology and tertiary education.
These experiences enabled students to develop valuable workplace skills, build confidence, explore career interests and gain a deeper understanding of the pathways available beyond school. We are incredibly grateful to the many local businesses, organisations and community partners who generously hosted our students and made this program such a success.
A sincere thank you to our Careers Team, led by Acting Head of Pathways Mr Joel McMahon, Careers Coordinator Ms Michaeli Lyon, Careers Practitioner Ms Teena Borshoff, and Careers Administrator Ms Rhonda Gifford. Thank you also to our Year 10 Team, led by Mr Mark Quiambao, supported by Year Level Coordinators Ms Joanna Beck and Ms Tahnee Richardson, along with Middle School Administration Support Ms Bianca Johnson, for their dedication in supporting this valuable program.
Year 9 Upskills Program
During the final week of Term 2, our Year 9 students participated in the Upskills Program, designed to strengthen students' pathway planning, wellbeing and engagement. Throughout the week, students explored future pathway options, heard from current Year 12 students about VCE and VCE VM, participated in the Courage to Care workshop focusing on being an Upstander, completed pathway planning activities, attended practical Upskills workshops led by Frankston High School alumni and staff, participated in the Speak Share wellbeing presentation, and explored Melbourne's CBD through the City Experience scavenger hunt.
Thank you to Ms Jasmine Rabinov, Head of Year 9, for her leadership of this outstanding program, supported by Ms Paige Jessulat, Head of Connectedness, and Year Level Coordinators Mr Gareth Fuller and Mr James Nicklen.
A Strong Start to Term 3
It has been wonderful to see how positively our Year 9 and 10 students have responded to our three consistent and predictable learning routines introduced this term:
- Laptops are closed during teacher instruction, including the First 10 minutes of every lesson.
- Every lesson begins with a calm and purposeful Do Now activity.
- Students remain in class during the first and last 10 minutes of each lesson unless there is an emergency.
These simple routines are helping students settle quickly, minimise disruptions and maximise learning time, creating calm, purposeful learning environments across our Middle School.
Looking Ahead
Throughout Term 3, Year 9 and 10 students will continue exploring pathway planning during their Optima lessons as they prepare for future subject selections.
It was wonderful to see so many families attend the recent Frankston High School Subject and Tertiary Expo, where students and parents explored our Middle and Senior School programs, spoke with teachers and connected with universities, TAFEs and other pathway providers.
2027 SUBJECT SELECTION | To support students and families, we have developed a year level-specific timelines, SEE HERE, outlining key dates and events related to subject selection.
If you have not yet explored the FHS Pathways Website, I encourage you to do so. The website, accessible via the Compass Favourites tab, has been designed as a one-stop resource for subject selection, pathway planning and future career information, including a range of webinar videos for students and families.

As we begin Semester 2, I encourage all students to reflect on their Semester 1 reports and attendance. Consider what actions you can take to make the most of every learning opportunity by attending school every day, completing assessment tasks on time and engaging fully in both classroom and extracurricular opportunities.
Chookas to all Year 9 and 10 students performing in the upcoming School Production, Mary Poppins. The Middle School Team is looking forward to seeing you perform opening night, Thursday 30 July.
