Performing Arts - Music 

This week, we hosted our 2027 Music Expo for new students and families joining MGSC next year and wanting to find out more about the Music program.

We were delighted with the fantastic turnout, with families attending one of two sessions to learn more about the two Music pathways offered in Years 7 and 8: Core Music and Ensemble Music, previously known as the Specialist Music Classes.

Families heard about the benefits of music education and, in particular, the many benefits that come from learning to play an instrument. They also had the opportunity to meet our specialist instrumental teachers, explore the range of instruments available and, most importantly, try them out for themselves.

A special congratulations and thank you to our Year 7 and 8 String Orchestra, who performed The Wellerman, and our Year 8 Concert Band, who performed Spytrain. Both ensembles demonstrated the enormous progress our junior students have made over the past year. Their performances showcased not only their growing instrumental skills, but also their ability to listen, watch, respond and work together to create a strong ensemble performance. These performances also highlight something that sits at the heart of our Ensemble Music program. Learning an instrument and playing in an ensemble is about much more than developing musical skills. It gives students opportunities to develop: 

CONFIDENCE

I can do something I couldn't do before.

PERSISTENCE

I can keep going when something is difficult.

BELONGING

I am part of something bigger than myself.

CONNECTION

I listen, respond and contribute to others.

The success of the evening was made possible through the wonderful work of our Instrumental Music teachers and the many current students who volunteered to help with the instrument trials. Our students were fantastic ambassadors for the Music program. They welcomed new students and families, talked enthusiastically about their own experiences, demonstrated instruments and helped prepare them for the next student to have a turn. They even took on the less glamorous but very important job of washing mouthpieces and getting instruments ready for the next player.

It was wonderful to see our students sharing their enthusiasm for music and helping future MGSC students discover the opportunities that are available to them.

Spring Concert

Tuesday 8 September at the Kingston Arts Centre 

Tickets for the Spring Concert on September 8 are selling fast. All families received a notification via the Compass Event with a link inside the event. Families are asked also to give consent so that we know that you have read the information about this important event.

The Spring Concert is a showcase of the entire Music program with all ensembles performing what they have been working on for many months. This is the only event that we hold offsite, providing our students with the opportunity to perform in a much larger and more fit for purpose venue.
