VCE VM
Our Year 11 VCE Vocational Major students completed their first Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) block at the end of June, marking an exciting milestone in their VM journey.
Students spent time in a diverse range of industries and workplaces, gaining first-hand experience of what it is like to be part of a professional environment. For many, this was their first opportunity to step beyond the classroom and experience workplace expectations, responsibilities and routines, within potential industries they wish to pursue after graduation.
SWL provides students with an opportunity to apply their classroom learning in authentic workplace settings, while developing important employability skills such as communication, teamwork, organisation, problem-solving, time management and workplace professionalism.
The diversity of student placements was a highlight of the experience, with students exploring industries and pathways that reflected their individual interests and future goals.
One student completed their placement at a local church, supporting a range of community programs and gaining valuable experience working with people of different ages and backgrounds.
“As part of my VM placement, I completed work experience at a local faith-based community organisation where I had the opportunity to support a range of community programs. I prepared and packed food bags for people in need, made coffee for the Friday community food run, and helped with playgroup sessions by supporting activities and engaging with children and families.
This experience strengthened my communication, teamwork and customer service skills while allowing me to make a positive contribution to the community. It also helped me develop confidence in a real workplace environment and apply the employability skills and values which will help me in my future career aspirations.” - Alaine M
Another student took advantage of a unique opportunity to complete their SWL experience aboard the HMAS Cerberus, gaining an insight into the Australian Navy and exploring how their interests in science and technology could connect with future career pathways.
“I had the opportunity to complete 10 days of work experience with the HMAS Cerberus Navy.I learnt countless things, from understanding how marine ships function and operate to experiencing the simulations used to prepare crews to live and work at sea aboard a naval submarine.
One of the highlights was completing an experiment with used oil from a large ship tank, where we investigated its cleanliness, temperature, density and oxygen levels. It might not sound exciting to most people, but it was definitely a highlight for me because I have always enjoyed science practicals at school.
Without the VM program, I would not have been able to take this opportunity as part of my SWL. Also studying Information Technology at Holmesglen through VET, I was able to apply some of my knowledge while working around the base and exploring areas such as the metal technology rooms. I also had time to learn about materials and skills that I can use in the future pathways I take after high school.” - Alyssa B
These experiences highlight the importance of Structured Workplace Learning as part of the VCE VM program. Students are not only gaining an understanding of different workplaces and industries, but are also developing the confidence and employability skills needed to take their next steps beyond school.
Whether contributing to community programs, exploring a career in the Navy or applying knowledge from VET studies, each student's experience was unique. Most importantly, students were able to learn by doing, reflect on their strengths and interests, and begin making meaningful connections between their learning and their future pathways.
We are incredibly proud of the way our Year 11 VM students embraced their first SWL block. Their enthusiasm, willingness to learn and openness to new experiences have made this an important and valuable step in their VCE VM journey.
