Students have read, discussed and rated the six books that have been shortlisted in 2026.   To further deepen literary/thematic understanding and have a bit of fun while doing so, the students are encouraged to participate in a creative response.  This year, inspiration to make smoothies as a response, was found in the book Golden by Jade Timms.  This book is set in a seaside town where the main protagonist works in a juice bar.  She finds satisfaction in creating nourishing smoothies for customers in a professional setting, which contrasts with the heavy themes of grief and trauma that she is working through in her personal life.  Used as symbols in the book - smoothies are delicious in real-life! I would like to thank Lina Mansour who developed and presented the smoothie making activity to the students.

The MGSC Shadow Judges have wrapped up this year’s program by voting for This Stays Between Us by Margot McGovern, as the CBCA Older Readers book of the year.  Thank you and very well done to the students who participated in Shadow Judging this year as they have diligently read six books in short succession and generously shared their ideas at the judging table.
