Principal's Message
Dear MGSC Community
It is hard to believe that we are already approaching the halfway point of Term 3. The past few weeks have been particularly busy at MGSC, with our students involved in an extraordinary range of learning, sporting, cultural and performing arts opportunities.
One of the great highlights has been our College production of Hadestown. I had the pleasure of attending the production and was incredibly proud of the professionalism, confidence and talent demonstrated by our students. A production of this scale requires an enormous commitment over many months, both on stage and behind the scenes, and I would like to congratulate all of the students involved.
I would particularly like to acknowledge Keyanna Burgher and our Performing Arts team, along with the many staff, students and families who contributed their time and energy to making the production such a success. The professionalism of our staff was certainly reflected in the quality of the students' performances.
We have also recently farewelled the 19 students and staff from our sister school, Nakamura High School in Japan. Their visit was a wonderful reminder of the value of our long-standing sister-school relationship and the friendships that can develop through cultural exchange. There were certainly some emotional farewells between our Nakamura students and their host families when they departed!
My sincere thanks go to the MGSC families who welcomed a Nakamura student into their homes. Hosting a student is a significant commitment, and your generosity allowed our visitors to experience Australian family and school life in a very personal way. Thank you also to Hatsu Watanabe and Paul Bartlett who coordinated the program of events and to the many staff who helped make the visit such a memorable experience by welcoming the students into their classrooms.
Our students have also continued to represent MGSC with distinction in a range of other areas. Congratulations to our Year 7 Soccer team, which has progressed to the State competition, and to our Aerobics and Dance students who have qualified for the national championships.
A special congratulations also goes to Madi Ryan, who has been invited to attend the 2026 Under 18 Women's National Squad Camp in Canberra. This is the first stage of preparation for the FIBA U18 Women's Asia Cup, and is a wonderful achievement. We wish Madi every success as she takes this next step in her basketball career.
This week we have also been celebrating National Science Week, with this year's theme, Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All. Our STEAM team has organised activities throughout the week including seed planting, slime making, Staff vs Student Trivia Quiz and a Women in STEAM Scavenger Hunt. It has been terrific to see students engaging with Science beyond the classroom and enjoying the opportunity to explore, experiment and compete. There will be a full report in the next newsletter.
Looking ahead – our Strategic Review
Monday marked the first formal day of our 2026 Strategic Review, an important process that occurs every four years in Victorian government schools.
The Review provides us with an opportunity to look carefully at our progress over the current Strategic Plan, consider the impact of our work on student learning and wellbeing, and identify the priorities that will guide MGSC through our next four-year Strategic Plan.
As part of Monday's Review, members of the Review Panel spent considerable time visiting classrooms and speaking with students and staff. I would like to thank our teachers and students for simply allowing the panel to see MGSC as it is every day – classrooms where relationships, engagement and learning are at the centre of our work.
Our Review continues over the coming weeks and will ultimately help us shape the next stage of MGSC's improvement journey. I look forward to sharing more about the outcomes of this work with our community as the process progresses.
A busy and vibrant school
One of the things I value most about MGSC is the breadth of opportunities available to our students. In just a few weeks we have seen students participating in our musical production, international exchange, Outdoor Education camps and excursions, Mathematics competitions, interschool sport, Science Week activities and a host of other learning experiences.
These opportunities don't happen by accident. Behind every excursion, performance, competition, camp or special event are staff who have planned, organised, supervised and supported our students – often contributing many additional hours to make these experiences possible.
I would like to acknowledge and thank our staff for the energy and care they continue to bring to their work. I also thank our families for the many ways in which you support both your children and the College.
There is still so much more to look forward to during the remainder of Term 3, including the opening of our Wellness Studio and I look forward to sharing more of our students' achievements with you over the coming weeks.
