From 1/2 Classrooms

Learning Through Recounts
This term, our Grade 1 and 2 students have been developing their recount writing skills by reflecting on real-life experiences and sharing them with others.
Excursion to Como House
Students enjoyed an exciting excursion to Como House, where they stepped back in time and explored what life was like in the past. During the visit, they toured the historic house, examined old-fashioned furniture and household items and learned about how families lived many years ago.
After the excursion, students used their observations and memories to write detailed recounts. They focused on sequencing events in order, including important details, and sharing their thoughts and feelings about the experience. It was wonderful to see students recalling learning and highlights from the day.
Interviewing an Older Person
Also, as part of our Through the Generations unit, students interviewed an older person about what life was like when they were young. They asked thoughtful questions about school, technology, food and leisure. Before conducting their real interviews, students explored examples of thoughtful questions and practised asking follow-up questions to encourage further detail.
Students discovered many interesting differences between the past and present. After their interviews, students transformed the information they gathered into engaging recounts, practising their writing skills while making meaningful connections with their loved ones.
We are very proud of the effort students have shown in listening, speaking, questioning and writing. These authentic experiences have helped bring recount writing to life!
For both tasks, students also learned the importance of the editing process. Using an editing checklist, students carefully reread their work to check for capital letters, punctuation, spelling and to ensure their writing made sense. The checklist supported students in identifying areas for improvement and encouraged them to take pride in producing their best work.
The final step was publishing their recounts. Students took great pride in sharing their completed pieces, recounting their experiences from the Como House excursion and interviews. Their writing showcased their ability to sequence events, include important details and reflect on what they had learned. It was wonderful to see their growing confidence as writers and their enthusiasm for sharing their personal stories with others.
Thank you for another wonderful term of learning! We wish all families a wonderful holiday break.
See you in Term 3!
