Historical Narratives
This term, students have continued to develop their writing skills through the exploration of historical recounts written in the first person. Throughout the term, we have examined the structure and language features of historical recounts, with a particular focus on developing the writing trait of voice. Students have used this knowledge to revise and refine the historical recount they completed as a 'cold write' in Week 1. This week, students drew upon their new skills and understanding to craft a final published piece. They will proudly share this work with their families at Expo, showcasing the growth, effort and learning they have demonstrated during writing sessions throughout Term 2.

This fortnight, students have been developing their understanding of subtraction through the use of the vertical algorithm. They have been learning how to rename numbers when required, enabling them to accurately subtract both two-digit and three-digit numbers. Students have practised applying this strategy to a range of subtraction problems, including solving worded problems, and are building confidence in explaining their mathematical thinking and processes.

In our Applied Mathematics sessions, students have been developing their understanding of mass through hands-on measurement activities. They have been making estimates about the mass of a variety of objects and then testing the accuracy of their predictions by measuring the items using scales. Through these experiences, students have been strengthening their understanding of units of mass and developing their ability to make more accurate estimations based on prior knowledge and experience.

Over the last two weeks, students have been refining their Home Learning Interview tasks and preparing for the end-of-term Expo. They are looking forward to sharing what they have learnt about their historical object and the stories connected to it. Students have worked hard to create engaging presentations that demonstrate their understanding of historical inquiry and the significance of personal artefacts. We are excited to see them showcase their learning, creativity, and growing confidence as they share their work with families and the wider school community.
As part of their Integrated Studies and Literacy learning, Grade 3/4 students visited IMAX and the Melbourne Museum to deepen their understanding of First Nations histories and historical perspectives.
During the excursion, students watched Australia 3D at IMAX and participated in a self-guided exploration of the First Peoples Exhibition at Melbourne Museum. They also had opportunities to explore a range of other exhibits, including Melbourne Story, Our Wondrous Planet, and the Milarri Garden.

This learning experience supported students in developing their skills as young historians by encouraging them to investigate how and why the British colony was established in Australia, how historians gather and interpret evidence to tell stories about the past, and the impact of first contact on First Nations Australians. Students also explored the importance of considering and respecting different perspectives when learning about historical events.
The excursion provided a valuable opportunity for students to connect their classroom learning with real-world experiences and deepen their understanding of Australia's history.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the three mothers who generously volunteered their time to support us on this excursion. Their assistance helped make the day run smoothly and provided valuable support for our students. We greatly appreciate their willingness to give their time and contribute to this enriching learning experience.
To support our learning at school, we ask that students complete the following home learning each week:
Multiplication Practice - sent home each week
The maths, spelling and multiplication sheets are glued in Home Learning books, and students should bring these each Monday to receive new home learning for the week ahead and to submit their homework for the previous week to their teachers.

We would like to wish all Grade 3/4 students and their families a relaxing, safe, and enjoyable two-week holiday break. Thank you for your support throughout the term. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for Term 3 on Monday 13th July, refreshed and ready for another exciting term of learning!
