Australian Bush Ballads in Music: Singing Our Way Through History
This term our students have been travelling through time in Music by learning classic Australian bush ballads. These songs are full of big characters, cheeky humour and stories from a very different Australia. They have been the perfect soundtrack for our Inquiry into Australian history and the people who shaped it.
Our Foundation to Year 2 students have been clapping, tapping and laughing their way through Click Go the Shears. They have discovered what life was like in the shearing sheds and how music can capture the rhythm of real work and real people.
Our Year 3 and 4 students have been learning Botany Bay, a song packed with adventure, travel and the mixed emotions of leaving home. It has opened up great conversations about immigration stories and what it means to start a new life in a new place.
Our Year 5 and 6 students have been diving into Waltzing Matilda, exploring the mystery, folklore and national identity wrapped up in this iconic tune. They have been unpacking the story behind the lyrics and thinking about how songs can reflect the challenges and values of a whole generation.
These ballads connect us to a time when Australia looked, sounded and felt very different. Through music, students are discovering how people lived, travelled, worked and dreamed. They are also building a deeper understanding of inclusion and how the stories of many cultures and communities have shaped the country we know today.
It has been wonderful to see students singing with confidence, curiosity and plenty of enthusiasm. Music has become a playful doorway into history, identity and the shared stories that make Australia unique.
