Year 1/2

Literacy:
Over the past three weeks, the Grade 1 and 2 students have been exploring procedure writing.
We began our learning with the story Wombat Stew, where students identified the steps in a procedure and explored how verbs, adverbs, and adjectives can make instructions clearer and more interesting.
Students then put their learning into practice by creating their own Grass Heads. They followed a procedure, recorded each step, and wrote detailed instructions so that others could successfully make a Grass Head of their own.
This week, students completed a Walking Rainbow science experiment. Using plastic cups, water, food colouring and paper towels, they created a colourful rainbow as the coloured water travelled between the cups. Students followed the procedure, observed the results, and then wrote their own set of instructions, ensuring they included a title, equipment list, method, and illustrations to support the reader.
We are very proud of the way students have developed their understanding of procedure writing and their ability to write clear, detailed instructions for others to follow.
Maths:
In Maths, students have been learning about subtraction. Students have learnt a number of strategies to subtract 1 and 2 digit numbers, including partition in to 10's and 1's and using a number line to complete the 'jump strategy'.
Students have been linking subtraction to real life, by learning how to calculate change when purchasing items. This worked great when students needed to purchase items at market day!
Humanities:
In Humanities, we have been learning to identify sustainable features within our school. Students located different sustainable features and discussed how they help our school environment.
We have also been learning about how to stay safe in our community. Students created a community safety advertisement with a clear main message designed to attract attention.
We have been busily preparing for the Moriac PS Humanities Expo and the excitement has been buzzing!
Thank you to all the families who attended this celebration of learning. The students were so proud and excited to share all their hard work with you.
Respectful Relationships:
In Respectful Relationships, students have been learning about stress. Students created a definition, discussed what stress feels like in the body, and different strategies to overcome stress. Students were introduced to Wibbly, a character who experiences stress. Students gave him advice on what he can do:
Cyber Safety:
Student in 1/2 were educated about Cyber Safety by Senior Constable Cathryn Hastie.
Swimming:
Students will be attending swimming lessons every day next week, Mon-Fri. Please refer to the information uploaded on compass and seesaw for more details. We ask that students come to school with their bathers on under their uniform and bring a separate swimming bag, so they don't need to take their school bags to swimming. We understand that will be a big week for students, so we will prioritise wellbeing and ensure students are engaging in simpler tasks that don't stray too far from their normal routine.
We hope everyone has a great winter break and students enjoy their 2 weeks off.
Kind Regards, the 1/2 team.
Miss Rodgers, Mrs Moore, Ms Edwards.
