From the Year 5 Classroom

It’s week 11 and we’ve made it to the last week of term! It has been a really busy term of learning, culminating in our visit to Sovereign Hill. This Friday is the last day of term. A reminder school finishes at 2.15pm.

Monday 18th August … Flying Fruit Fly Circus Workshop 

Friday 22nd August … Lightning Premiership for all Year 5 students 

Friday 12th September … Sacred Heart Athletics Carnival 

Camp 

We had a great time in Ballarat last week full of fun and learning … plus a visit or two to the lolly shop. We explored the underground mines, tried our hands at panning for gold, saw a gold bar worth $510 000 being poured, were treated to confectionary and candle dipping demonstrations and were lucky enough to attend the Aura light and sound show. Thanks to Mr Mullavey, Ms Bridgeman and Mr Hargreaves for coming along with us. Special thanks to Miss Connell for organising the camp for us. It really was a fantastic 3 days. Inquiry 

We have continued looking at important events in Australian history, in particular the events that led up to the Gold Rush of the 1850s and the influx of gold seekers to Victoria. We have been learning about gold mining, licences, the Eureka Stockade and the rebellion of the miners in preparation for our visit to Sovereign Hill. This Thursday we will be holding our gold auction, where students will have the opportunity to bid on lots of different goodies using the karats they have collected by completing tasks from our gold rubric. It is sure to be lots of fun!! 

Home Reading 

Students in Year 5 are encouraged to read at home for a minimum of 80 minutes per week. As an end of term treat, students who have been doing their reading will be shouted to a hot chip lunch on Friday as a thank you for their hard work.
