From the Year 1 Classroom

Welcome to our final newsletter of the term! It’s hard to believe that Semester One has come to an end. We have been very impressed with how the students have been coming to school with big, beautiful smiles, despite there being so much sickness going around. We’ve had a fantastic semester of learning and hope the children enjoy a well-earned break. Hopefully you’ve had the opportunity to read your child’s Semester 1 Report and can celebrate your child’s progress.

Literacy

This week we have been enjoying reading Harry By the Sea and discussing and role playing our new vocabulary words annoyed, shriek and grateful. It’s been pleasing to see how the children can summarise a narrative using the beginning, middle (problem) and ending (solution). Using the sentence starters In the beginning... Then... and Finally... it’s been fantastic to see the children confidently recalling the text sequentially, both verbally and written.

In Initial Lit we have been reviewing all the sounds that we have covered over the semester. These include:

ew as in grew and ue as in glue

ar as in star

oo in book and oo in moon

ow in snow and oa in boat

-y in cry and igh in light

or in fork and ore in snore

ai in rain and ay in play

ea in leaf and ee in tree

ur in surf, er in fern and ir in stir

Bossy e split digraph a_e, e_e, i_e, o_e, u_e

Maths

We have been consolidating our learning with Addition and Subtraction. The students have been working hard at understanding the relationships between the two. We refer to this as Fact Families. See the diagram below:

We have also been looking at multiple strategies to solve number sentences to 20. Instead of simply counting on using their fingers, students have been practising using doubles (6+6=12), near doubles (6+7= 6+6+1=13) building to the ten (6+9= 6+4+5=15) and for extension, using the split jump strategy to solve number problems to 100 (36+ 45= 36+40= 76+5=81).

Inquiry

Students have done a sensational job at understanding the difference between natural, built and managed features. They had the chance to show what they’ve learnt by creating their own design of a park that included built and natural features – They did an amazing job!! If only they could come to life, we’d have some pretty incredible playgrounds!

School Holidays Homework

If you're wanting to keep your child busy during the holidays or maybe you need a break, here are some optional activities!

- Addition and subtraction number sentences – roll a dice twice and create a number sentence to add or subtract.

- First to 100- In partners, take turns rolling a dice and adding on. Start at zero and continue rolling a dice until you get to 100. You can’t go over 100, so you must wait to get exactly 100!

- Roll 2 dice, add the numbers together eg. 3+5=8 and then double it! Double 8 is 16!

- Play Go Fish to practise doubling numbers (The students know how to play this!)

- Skip counting by 2’s, 5’s or 10’s from any starting number.

- Reading – you may use the QR code on your child’s new Term 3 Reading Diary to have access to all their Multi Lit readers online.

- Practice reading and spelling the Tricky Words from Term 1 and Term 2.

We hope you have a safe and happy holidays. Lucky you if you're escaping the cold like Mrs Hargreaves and Mrs. Wollington!! We look forward to hearing all about your holiday adventures when you come back in Term 3!
