Work Experience – Nuclear Medicine

In Week 2 this term, Euan Whaley, Year 12, was selected to participate in a week of Work Experience in Nuclear Medicine at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. Euan observed a range of different scans performed routinely within the laboratories, had an education session with the clinical educator, a physics session with a physicist, and visited the local cyclotron. A highlight for Euan was seeing all the different machinery and how they operate. This opportunity was highly competitive across the region, and The Gap State High School is incredibly proud of Euan’s successful application and the way he lived our school values while at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Academic Honours Learning Retreat – Year 8 and Year 9

On 29 April, Year 8 and Year 9 Academic Honours students attended QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute to participate in their Psychology Seminar Series. Students attended the following seminars and participated in a tour of the laboratories on site.

  • ‘Neuroimaging, the good, the bad and the dead salmon’ with Dr Baptiste Couvy-Duchesren
  • ‘Is the brain a trombone?’ with PhD Candidate Lachlan Hamilton
  • ‘Breaking barriers to treat dementia’ with Dr Lotta Oikari
  • ‘The genetics of depression’ with Dr Jodi Thomas

Our Academic Honours students represented The Gap State High School with pride and lived the school values across the retreat. Students Stepped Up and Thought Big by asking insightful questions of the presenters – with a few students even managing to stump a presenter with questions that they were unable to answer. They demonstrated Kindness in the way they conducted themselves in a professional work environment by being respectful and quiet around members of staff at the Institute, and Paid it Forward with beautiful manners to presenters, tour guides, and the bus driver. The Education Coordinator from QIMR Berghofer specifically commended our students on their ability to participate in such a mature way with the entire program, and for the frequency with which they asked questions of the presenters even amongst other schools who had brought older year levels to the Seminar Series.
