Year 8 Battle of the Bands

The Year 8 Battle of the Bands on 17 June went well, with many classes giving amazing performances! A big crowd showed up and there was lots of love and support for the performers. In the end, there was a tie between 8A and 8C, as well as some runner-up awards given to other classes. Overall, it was an amazing show, and a big thanks to all the music students who participated in Battle of the Bands!

VCE Music Evenings

The Year 11 Music Evening on 28 May went really well. It was lovely to see everyone working on choosing their main instrument and honing their skills, while also branching out of their comfort zones and performing with different instruments. There was heaps of variety and loads of really beautiful performances. Really well done everyone!

We also recently had the Year 12 Music Evening on 11 June, and it went amazingly! It was a great opportunity for all our Year 12 Contemporary and Repertoire Music students to showcase two contrasting songs from their programs and practise performing them in front of a live audience.

Highlights of the evening included watching all the gorgeous performances and seeing how much everyone has improved since Year 11. Everyone performed with confidence, and we are really looking forward to seeing their end of year programs!

Congratulations to our Year 11 Music class who performed so beautifully on Thursday 28 May, including one group and one solo. Thank you to our Year 10 Event Management students who organised the poster, videoed, did lights and crew.

Congratulations to our Year 12 Music students, who performed two contrasting pieces from their program on Thursday 11 June, which they are preparing for their end of year exam. Our Piano Repertoire students performed earlier in the evening, and then our Contemporary Music students performed. Thank you to their various ensemble members for their support, including Senior Rock Band members, and to Ellyce Calder for moderating.

The MGC Semester One String Soiree was on Tuesday 16 June, which gave all violin, cello and viola students an opportunity to showcase what they have achieved in their lessons throughout this semester. It was fantastic to hear all of the wonderful music! Thank you to all the string teachers for their hard work, and congratulations to everyone who performed. We look forward to hearing everyone again in Semester Two!

On 10 June, MGC held its Semester One Piano Soiree for the students of Hayden Dun and Katrina Halliday. The dress-up theme was Eras, and it was great to see everyone's incredible costumes. We had an appearance from Elton John, who won the best costume competition, and it was very entertaining to see all the attempts at the best bow. All the performances sounded incredible and reflected the effort that everyone has put in this semester. Congratulations to everyone who performed. We look forward to seeing everyone again at the Halloween Piano Soiree!

On 17 June, our guitar and drum students performed at the Guitar and Drum Soiree. Every performance was an absolute treat!

We had loads of new Year 7s performing this year, and they completely blew us away with their confidence and fluency. We also got to hear performances from some of our Year 12s, most of whom are currently completing Year 12 Music. It was really awesome to hear a snippet of their end of year programs!

And of course, us students would not be where we are without our amazing guitar and drum teachers, Andy and Marissa. We appreciate all of their hard work guiding each individual student to expand their musical knowledge and technical skill.

This term in Drama Club we have been introducing short scene work where we get into small groups and perform skits! It has been a blast filled with lots of laughter, and we are really excited to start working on a short production of Peter Pan next term. Feel free to join in the chaos in the Drama Room on Friday lunchtimes.

Shoelace Chaser

Last semester's Year 10 Drama class went to the Melbourne Theatre Company to see their recent performance of "Shoelace Chaser":

"Shoelace Chaser" explores the impact of being a young/teen carer for an ill parent. It demonstrates how being 17 is hard – hormones, homework, the looming question of what comes next. Add caring for your mum to the mix, and Thea’s juggling act is nothing short of Olympic.

Smart, self-sufficient and secretly just holding it together, Thea's spent the last two years keeping her life under wraps. No-one knows she’s a carer. Not even Syd, her endlessly chatty new running partner who pushes her to pursue a university athletics scholarship and dream of something more. But chasing that future means leaving her mum behind – and the last time Thea tried that, things didn’t quite go to plan.
