Assistant Principal's Report

As we reach the end of another busy and rewarding term, I want to take a moment to thank our wonderful community and to wish every student, family and staff member a safe and happy holiday break.

This term has been full of moments that remind me what a special place Melbourne Girls' College is, and our Reconciliation Assembly stands out as one of the most meaningful. It was a genuinely moving occasion, and one made possible by the care, thought and commitment of so many people.

Thank you to the staff and students who guided the planning and brought the assembly to life. Your work behind the scenes made all the difference. And to the students who spoke, performed and led with such maturity and heart, you should be incredibly proud. You created a space for our whole school to pause, listen and reflect on the journey toward reconciliation, and you did so with grace and authenticity. Assemblies like these are a powerful reminder that learning at MGC extends well beyond the classroom.

Congratulations to all Year 7 and 8 students who participated in the Aerobics competition on Sunday 21 June, not just to those students who made it to the podium, but to all students who participated and competed on the day.

I hope the break offers everyone a chance to rest, recharge and spend time with the people who matter most. Please take care of yourselves and one another, and I look forward to welcoming our students back, refreshed and ready, next term.

Wishing you all a safe, restful and happy holiday.

It has been a busy and successful period for our Year 7 students. Across a range of subjects, students have demonstrated creativity, teamwork and a willingness to challenge themselves.

In Performance, half of our Year 7 classes recently completed their class performances. Working collaboratively, each class created and presented an original 10-minute production based on an allocated theme. Students took on a variety of specialist roles, including acting, music, dance, scriptwriting, directing and technical production. The performances showcased the creativity, commitment and teamwork of our students, with each group bringing its unique ideas to life.

In Social World, students researched, wrote and delivered persuasive speeches addressed to politicians on environmental issues they felt passionate about. Topics included taxing fossil fuel companies, making public transport free, banning native forest logging and building more bike lanes in the City of Yarra. Students confidently presented their ideas to their peers and demonstrated thoughtful engagement with contemporary issues affecting their communities and the environment.

Students have also been busy in Product Design. Year 7 students recently completed their Crazy Creatures learning task, designing and creating imaginative creatures using a range of materials and techniques. The finished products reflected the creativity and individuality of each student and provided a wonderful showcase of their developing design skills.

Year 8

This week, half of our Year 8 classes who studied Music in Semester One took part in the annual Battle of the Bands. With just six lessons to prepare and some students learning an instrument for the very first time, we saw a fantastic range of performances. Highlights included 8E’s crowd-pleasing rendition of Teenage Dirtbag

Congratulations to our winning performances, Cider Vinegar (8A) and Best Part (8B). The event showcased the creativity, dedication and collaborative spirit of our students.

It has also been a strong period in sport, with both our Netball and Badminton teams finishing in first place. Adding to this success, our Year 8 cohort won their overall age group at Cross Country, an outstanding achievement reflecting both individual effort and team spirit. We look forward to Football and Soccer matches taking place next week and wish all teams the very best.

In Wellbeing, students have begun developing their Career Action Plans. Through a range of activities, they have been reflecting on their strengths, interests and goals, while considering how these may shape their future study and career pathways.

As the holidays approach, we encourage all students and families to take the opportunity to rest, recharge and enjoy a well-earned break. We hope everyone stays warm over the winter period and finds time to relax with family and friends. We look forward to welcoming students back refreshed and ready for another exciting term.
