Assistant Principal's Report

As Term Two comes to an end, our Year 9 and 10 students are beginning the course selection process for next year. Assemblies have been held with each year level to discuss the process and the preparation students need to undertake before choosing their subjects for 2027.

Information sessions will be held for parents and carers at the beginning of Term Three, and Course Counselling Days will take place in Week Two of Term Three. This is an exciting time for students, and we encourage families to discuss the options available with them in the coming weeks. Students have also been encouraged to speak with the adults in their lives about their career journeys, helping them gain insight into the many different pathways available after secondary school.

Year 10 students have completed their first official school exams and will receive their results shortly. They are encouraged to reflect on what went well, both in their exam preparation and during the exams themselves, as well as identifying areas for improvement ahead of the end-of-year exam period. The skills students develop in Year 10 will help set them up for a successful VCE.

Semester Two classes for Year 9 electives and Year 10 subjects have now begun, with students meeting their new teachers and exploring the knowledge and skills within these subjects. Parents and carers are encouraged to discuss these changes with their young people.

We wish all our families a safe and restful holiday break.

The end of Semester One has been busy for our wonderful Year 9 cohort.

Students have prepared for and completed their first exam, with every Year 9 student sitting the Mathematics exam. They have also been busy finishing projects for their electives, as Semester One subjects come to an end and new electives begin.

Subject selection has provided students with a taste of the many opportunities available at MGC. It has also given them a glimpse of the wide range of subjects offered in Year 10, which they will explore further during Course Counselling at the start of Term Three. For Mathematics, this will be a time when many students begin to consider whether they would like to pursue the advanced pathway. Students may also choose to try subjects that align with their possible VCE pathways and future interests.

City Experience, one of our favourite parts of the year, is fast approaching. During this five-day program, students will learn more about the heart of our great city in a safe and interactive way, visiting places such as the museum, Skydeck, the MCG, The Big Issue and more. Students will begin choosing their groups next week. It is important that all forms are completed in a timely manner and that each student ensures they have a buddy in their group whom they trust and can depend on.

Next term, students will also have the opportunity to visit the Holocaust Museum as part of their Humanities studies. This is an important experience that will help students deepen their understanding of history and reflect on the importance of tolerance, empathy and respect for all people.

Year 10

As we move further into the year, our Year 10 students are beginning to turn their focus toward some of the most exciting decisions in their secondary schooling journey: choosing VCE subjects that will help shape their future career pathways.

It has been fantastic to see the dedication students have already demonstrated, particularly in their approach to recent exams. Their commitment to preparation and perseverance is a strong indicator of the mindset needed for success in VCE and beyond. Students are encouraged to reflect on their exam experiences, celebrate what went well and consider the areas where they can continue to grow.

Several students were also selected to participate in the Rotary Mock Interview Program, which provided an excellent opportunity to practise key employability skills such as communication, confidence and professionalism. Experiences like these are invaluable in helping students understand expectations in the workforce and build their self-belief.

We are equally proud of those students who have completed Youth Mental Health Training. This is a highly valuable experience that equips students with the knowledge and skills to look after their own wellbeing, while also supporting their peers. These students are already making a positive impact within our school community.

Year 10 students have made a very strong transition into Semester Two. With subject changes now closed, students are well placed to settle into their new learning programs. This is an ideal time to reflect on current work habits, organisation and preparation for learning. Developing consistent routines now will support a smooth transition into the increased independence and responsibility required in VCE.

Looking ahead, families are encouraged to engage with the upcoming Course Counselling process. A Parent Information Session for 2027 Course Counselling and Subject Selections will be held online on Tuesday 14 July. Students, along with their parents and carers, will have an opportunity to book a course counselling session to ensure they are making informed decisions for 2027. More detailed information will be shared with parents and carers via email shortly.

We encourage all students to start thinking carefully about their interests, strengths and aspirations as they begin making decisions about their VCE pathways. This is an exciting time, and we look forward to supporting every student as they take these important next steps.

Finally, a huge congratulations to students who are starting to think about future leadership opportunities and putting their hand up to speak to their cohort at Year 10 assembly. A special mention to Ria, Abby, Miriam, Juno and Deanna for their performance last week.
