From the Mathematics Team

Did you know that the Mathematics team has been working hard to incorporate both retrieval practice and atomisation into their classes on a regular basis? Students use individual whiteboards to demonstrate their developing knowledge of concepts, giving teachers immediate feedback.

Retrieval practice and atomisation are highly effective strategies for improving learning in secondary schools. Retrieval practice involves regularly recalling information from memory through quizzes, questioning or low-stakes tests, which strengthens long-term retention and helps students identify gaps in their understanding.

Atomisation complements this process by breaking complex knowledge and skills into smaller, manageable components that can be taught, practised and assessed systematically. Together, these approaches reduce cognitive overload, enable teachers to monitor progress more accurately and support students in building secure foundations of knowledge before moving on to more challenging concepts.

As a result, students develop greater confidence, deeper understanding and improved academic achievement across subjects.
