Year 6

Welcome to Term 4!
We have settled in and working well, getting ready for a busy term ahead. Please find below information about Victorian Curriculum 2.0 areas that will be covered this term.
Religion
The focus this term is Christian Life and Catholic Social Teaching. Students will learn about the mission of Jesus and determine ways Christians can make a personal response now and in the future. They will learn about the challenges of following the mission of Jesus today. They will also learn about the principles of Catholic Social Teaching (CST) drawn from Scripture and the moral teaching of the Church. They will learn to consider local and global challenges and their impact in light of CST.
English
Reading & Viewing
In Reading, students will finish exploring Laughter is the Best Ending by Maryam Master before moving on to a new text, Rivet Boy. We will continue to develop the comprehension skills needed to understand and respond to a variety of texts, with a particular focus on building word knowledge and strengthening language skills. Students will explore unfamiliar vocabulary, use context clues to determine meaning, and develop a deeper understanding of how language is used to convey ideas, create meaning and engage readers. They will also continue to practise identifying key ideas, locating supporting evidence, and making literal and inferential interpretations to strengthen their overall comprehension and confidence as readers.
Writing
In Writing, students will finish revisiting narrative writing, consolidating their understanding of the key features and structures of effective narratives. We will then move on to a recap of persuasive writing, where students will revisit how to develop a clear point of view, organise ideas logically, and use persuasive language and supporting evidence to influence an audience. Through these lessons, students will continue to strengthen their writing skills, focusing on clarity, structure, vocabulary and the effective communication of ideas.
Mathematics
This term in Mathematics, students will focus on location and transformation using Cartesian planes and coordinates, measurement of length, mass and capacity and data investigations.
Location & Transformation (Cartesian planes & coordinates): Students will locate points in all four quadrants of the Cartesian plane using ordered pairs (𝑥,𝑦) (x,y), and describe how coordinates change when a point is translated (moved), reflected or rotated.
Measurement – Length, Mass and Capacity: Students will convert between common metric units (e.g. mm, cm, m, km; g, kg; mL, L) and use decimal representations to solve practical measurement problems.
Data Investigations: Students will plan and conduct guided statistical investigations, collecting and representing categorical and discrete numerical data, then interpret and compare their results in context
Capabilities: Personal & Social and Inter-Cultural Capabilities
This term in Capabilities, students will be learning to explain the meaning of Personal and Social impacts on their lives and the lives of those people around them. They will explore and learn about how different cultures can work together to ensure all values are acknowledged and respected.
Humanities: Business and Economics
In Humanities in Term 4, our focus will be on Business and Economics. Students will learn how natural, human and capital resources are used to satisfy needs and wants, and are introduced to the concept of scarcity. Students consider entrepreneurship, and study work and its importance to both individuals and the community. They look at the factors influencing consumer decision-making and key strategies for informed personal consumer and financial decision-making. Students consider the concept of taxation, including the Goods and Services Tax (GST), and are introduced to online banking and the importance of saving and keeping money safe.
School Wide Expectations
As a Year Six cohort, we meet regularly for prayer, level news and updates. This will continue to support students to articulate issues which they can problem solve as a level.
We will continue to develop student leadership skills this term through using their initiative to take on roles and responsibilities in the classroom and the wider school community.
We will continue to be placing a particular emphasis on our school wide expectations: Respect, Responsibility and Safety. We will continue to use the Children’s Mental Health Continuum as a tool of their mental health and wellbeing. As a cohort, we are identifying strategies to help build a culture of resilience in ourselves and others. We will continue to promote these expectations through explicit teaching of Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships resource and class meetings.
Home Learning
Students have been given a diary to help them organise themselves and are expected to log their reading in it each week (at least 3-5 times a week). Please make sure they are spending 20-30 minutes a night (where possible) reading a book, either independently or out loud. Student diaries will be checked weekly by the teachers as well as emphasising this at our cohort meetings. You are also welcome to use the diary as a way of communicating with your child’s teacher.
Uniform
Summer Uniform Season
During Term Four, students are required to wear their Summer school uniform or appropriate uniform as required. This will also require all students to be wearing a school hat during outside activities. Students are also required to bring a named drink bottle to school each day. Bottles can be refilled as needed during the day.
A reminder that children are expected to wear appropriate uniform to school each day: either full Summer or Sports uniform on designated sports days (Please see your classroom timetable). If your child is not in their correct uniform, please write a note for your teacher to explain the reason. If your child’s hair is longer than their shoulders, we ask that their hair is tied back for hygiene purposes. We also ask that students do not wear jewellery or nail polish as stated in the school’s uniform policy. St Agatha’s school policy allows for NO make-up at school.
Incursions/Excursions
This term students will be participating in various activities that may need parent/carer permission: we ask that you are vigilant across parent platforms and accept permissions accordingly
General Reminders:
Please make sure students wear deodorant/sunscreen daily and also bring a roll-on deodorant/sunscreen to school to keep in their bag for applying after recess/lunch times, sports or just to freshen up.
