Religion
In Term 4, Year 2 students will explore what it means to live a Christian Life through the story of the Good Samaritan. They will identify their own gifts and talents and consider how they can use these to help and care for others. Students will explore how their choices and actions can affect themselves, other people and God’s creation, with a focus on recognising and responding to the needs of others. Through the message of the Good Samaritan, students will reflect on how we can show kindness, compassion, respect and love to everyone in our community.
English
In Term 4, Year 2 students will continue to develop their reading skills by exploring a range of texts, learning how different texts are organised and how authors use language for different purposes. Students will compare characters, settings and other features across literary texts, sharing their opinions and personal preferences about the books they read. They will strengthen their phonemic awareness and word knowledge by blending, segmenting and manipulating sounds to read and write increasingly complex words, while developing greater fluency, phrasing and expression when reading aloud. In writing, students will learn the structure and purpose of letters, developing their ability to communicate ideas clearly and appropriately for their audience. They will also focus on editing their writing, checking for correct letter structure, spelling, punctuation and sentence construction to produce clear and polished pieces of work. Lastly, students will continue to develop their handwriting skills, practicing correct letter formation using lower-case and upper-case letters.
Maths
In Term 4, Year 2 students will continue to build their number knowledge and problem-solving skills through a range of hands-on and engaging learning experiences. Students will begin the term by consolidating their understanding of the four operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication and division—through a range of practical problems and mathematical strategies. Students will then explore 2D shapes, learning to recognise, compare and classify shapes by their features, including the number of sides, and using mathematical language such as opposite, parallel, curved and straight to describe them. They will use hands-on activities to identify and manipulate shapes to create pictures as well as explain how they know shapes are alike or different. Towards the end of the term, students will apply their mathematical knowledge to money problems, exploring real-life situations involving money transactions, addition and multiplication. They will practise choosing appropriate calculation strategies, representing problems in different ways and explaining their solutions using mathematical language. Students will continue to develop their confidence in applying mathematics to practical, everyday situations.
Science
In Term 4, Year 2 students will explore Earth and space, developing their understanding of our place within the solar system. Students will learn that Earth is one of eight planets in our solar system and investigate the Sun, Moon, planets and stars, observing patterns in their changing positions in the sky. They will explore how careful observation can help us identify and describe these patterns and develop their curiosity about the world beyond Earth.
