Year 5

Religion
Our strand for this term is Christian Life and Catholic Social Teaching (CST). In the first few weeks, students will learn about the principles of CST and describe some local and global challenges and their impact in light of CST.
English (Reading and Writing)
Students will continue building their literacy skills through our class novel, The Last Bear. They will identify key information, explore characters, themes and viewpoints, and discuss both the literal and inferred meanings within the text. Students will also examine how authors use language and text features to influence readers, before applying these strategies in their own persuasive writing. Later in the term, students will explore a teacher-selected information text, learning how factual texts are organised and how information can be communicated clearly and effectively through information reports.
Spelling
Students will continue to develop their spelling knowledge by investigating word origins, prefixes, suffixes, base words and common spelling patterns. They will apply these strategies to read, spell and understand increasingly complex vocabulary across a range of texts.
Grammar and Vocabulary
Students will strengthen their understanding of grammar by learning how complex sentences can be used to add detail and improve the flow of writing. They will explore how expanded noun groups create more precise descriptions and will continue to use punctuation accurately, including commas and apostrophes. Students will also broaden their vocabulary by exploring precise, technical and subject-specific language and applying new words in their speaking and writing.
Mathematics
In the next 3 weeks, students will learn to perform and describe the results of 2D shape transformations and identify symmetries. They will convert between 12- and 24-hour time and begin estimating, constructing and measuring angles in degrees.
Students will continue developing their mathematical understanding through our units on 2D Shape and Time. In the 2D Shape unit, students will explore the properties of two-dimensional shapes and investigate how shapes can be transformed through translations, reflections and rotations. They will identify lines of symmetry and describe what changes and what stays the same when shapes are transformed.
In the Time unit, students will build their understanding of both 12-hour and 24-hour time systems, learning to convert between them and solve practical, real-world time problems. They will apply their mathematical reasoning to calculate elapsed time, interpret timetables and schedules, and explain their thinking using efficient strategies.
Humanities
Our unit for this term is on managing the economic environment. The Year Five classes will define environments and explain their importance to people and communities. The students will identify and describe key environmental resources used by humans and evaluate the impact of their use and exploitation and how human actions can affect the economy in positive and negative ways.
Science
Our science unit for the first three weeks of this term will be on Body Systems. The Year Five classes will develop a greater understanding of the respiratory, digestive and circulatory systems. They will also identify how different body systems work together and how they respond to physical activity.
Capabilities
Throughout the term, students will explain a range of ways to support themselves and others in personal and social contexts. They will investigate statements of self-talk to encourage them to manage their emotions when challenges occur.
Students will use strategies to help them understand points of view that differ from their own. They will also learn to tackle areas of discrimination such as sexism and racism.
During this time, students will continue to take more responsibility for their own health and personal safety.
