Year 4

Religion

During Weeks 1–3, students will learn about the life of St Francis of Assisi as they prepare for our school Mass. They will explore his deep love for God, care for creation and commitment to serving others, and reflect on how his example can inspire them in their own lives. Students will then begin exploring the question, "Who is our neighbour?" as they learn about The Greatest Commandment (Matthew 22:34–40). They will reflect on Jesus' teaching to love God and love others and consider how these teachings can guide their actions and relationships. Later in the term, students will continue their learning through The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) and explore Advent as a time of hope, preparation and anticipation for the celebration of the birth of Christ.

English

Reading

During Weeks 1–3, students will read and explore Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo, while developing their understanding of persuasive writing. Through class discussions, reading activities and written responses, students will identify and analyse persuasive techniques, language features and the ways authors influence their audience. Students will continue building on the comprehension strategies developed throughout the year, including predicting, questioning, making connections, visualising, summarising and inferring. They will also focus on identifying main ideas, supporting details and the author's purpose while developingtheir confidence in discussing and responding to texts.

Writing

In Writing, students will begin the term with a focus on persuasive writing during Weeks 1–3. They will learn the structure of persuasive texts, including how to write a clear introduction, develop strong arguments supported by reasons and evidence, and conclude their writing effectively. Students will also explore persuasive language features and techniques used to influence an audience while developing their confidence in expressing and justifying their opinions. They will then move on to procedural writing, where they will create clear and sequenced instructions for arange of purposes. Later in the term, students will develop their understanding of letter writing, learning the structure and language features of both formal and informal letters.

Throughout all writing units, students will continue to strengthen their vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and editing skills.

Maths

During Weeks 1–3, students will focus on 3D shapes, learning to identify, name and describe their properties. They will investigate the features of a variety of 3D objects, including faces, surfaces, edges and vertices, and compare how different shapes arealike and different.

Throughout the remainder of Term 4, students will explore a range of mathematical concepts including location, mass, capacity, length and area. They will also strengthen their understanding of multiplication, division, fractions and decimals, applying these skills to real-world problem-solving situations such as calculating purchases and change. Through hands-on investigations, problem-solving activities and revision of key concepts, students will continue to develop their fluency, reasoning and confidence as mathematicians.

Science

During Weeks 1–3, students will investigate how forces such as pushes, pulls and friction affect the movement of objects. Through hands-on investigations, they will explore how different materials, shapes and designs help objects perform functions and solve problems. Students will develop their scientific inquiry skills by making predictions, conducting experiments, recording observations and communicating their findings. Later in the term, students will extend this learning by exploring how forces act on roller coasters and investigating how their design influences speed, motion and safety. Our excursion to Scienceworks on Friday 30th October will provide an exciting opportunity to deepen this understanding through interactive exhibits and real-world experiences.

Personal and Social Capabilities

Students will continue developing their Personal and Social Capability by building self awareness, managing their emotions, and recognising how their behaviour affects others. They will practise showing empathy, considering different perspectives, and forming positive relationships. Throughout the term, students will work collaboratively, communicate respectfully, and make responsible decisions within the classroom and wider school community.
